Interim manager Darren Fletcher shared his disappointment after the 2-2 draw with Burnley and confirmed he will remain in charge of Manchester United for the next fixture against Brighton.
Following the 2-2 draw with Burnley in the 21st round of the 2025/26 Premier League, interim boss Darren Fletcher gave an honest assessment of Manchester United’s performance and emphasized his immediate direction on the sidelines.
Playing away at Burnley, the Red Devils experienced a turbulent 90 minutes. After falling behind in the first half, the team showed clear improvement after the break by coming back to lead 2-1. However, the defense could not hold firm until the end, allowing the opposition to equalize and causing Man United to drop a costly victory.
Speaking after the match, Darren Fletcher did not hide his disappointment: “When leading 2-1, you always want to control the game better and try to score another goal. To be fair, Burnley had a very good shot and there was little we could do. What frustrates me is not being able to score a third goal to win 3-2.”
Nonetheless, the former Scottish midfielder praised his players highly. He believed the team’s fighting spirit and attitude were the most positive aspects: “The players gave their all. Their effort, focus, and ability to absorb new ideas quickly are commendable. I’m pleased with their performance, but I know this team can still improve.”
Notably, Darren Fletcher also confirmed he will continue to manage Manchester United in their next FA Cup match against Brighton & Hove Albion: “I have spoken with the board and will take charge of the Brighton game. After that, we will see. Right now, we are taking it one match at a time.”
Additionally, the interim coach specifically mentioned the young talent Lacey, who recently had a standout performance: “I told him to play his own way—fearlessly, directly, and with passion. He has faced many injuries, but I believe Lacey will play an important role in Manchester United’s future.”
The 2-2 draw leaves Manchester United stuck in 6th place with 32 points, just 2 points behind the top 4. Although their play has improved somewhat, this result raises several questions for Darren Fletcher during his interim tenure.
