Gary Neville has provided a frank assessment regarding Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s potential return to Manchester United following Ruben Amorim’s departure from Old Trafford.
The former MU captain, Gary Neville, believes that appointing Solskjaer as interim manager would mean the Red Devils are repeating a vicious cycle. According to Neville, MU is heading down the same path Liverpool took before Jurgen Klopp arrived.
Neville – who was mentioned by Amorim during his farewell statements – said he does not rule out Solskjaer’s official appointment if he improves MU’s results. However, he also made a notable comparison with Liverpool.
“I’m not saying it’s impossible. We have seen this at Liverpool for about 25–30 years when they went through a period without winning the title,” Neville said on Sky Sports. “MU has done the same over the past 12 years. They once had Ryan Giggs as interim manager 10 years ago, then Ole, and then went back to the ‘old boys’ again.”.
Neville emphasized that Solskjaer is deeply devoted to the club, understands the job, and has experience in the role. Additionally, other names mentioned, like Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy, are also wonderful individuals closely connected to MU.
“They know the club well. But whoever it is, over the next 4–5 months, they will face immense pressure if results don’t improve. Therefore, they must be prepared for that. Whoever among the three mentioned takes the job, I wish them luck because this is an extremely tough role,” Neville warned.
As for Fletcher, who previously served as first-team assistant under Erik ten Hag and acted as technical director, this will be his first experience as a manager. That’s why MU is considering bringing in an experienced interim coach until the season’s end, with Solskjaer and Carrick both on the shortlist.
“If the family (MU) calls, I would say ‘yes’ any day of the week. It’s not right to speak about someone else’s job, but if asked, of course, I would accept,” before Amorim was appointed, Solskjaer admitted at a Q&A session at the Oslo Business Forum that he was ready to return to MU if called upon.
