Ruben Amorim could make a swift comeback

Ruben Amorim, ex-manager of Manchester United, might soon resume his coaching career only a few days following his sacking by the team at Old Trafford.

The likely destination is none other than his homeland Portugal, where Benfica is reportedly seriously considering a change in their coaching leadership amid a severe decline in performance.

According to multiple sources from the British media, especially the Daily Mail, Amorim is in a strong position to take over the head coach role at Benfica if Jose Mourinho fails to improve results in the near future. The traditionally successful Portuguese club currently trails by as much as 10 points in the domestic title race, an unacceptable gap given the club’s ambitions and resources.

Moreover, Benfica has been hugely disappointing in the Champions League, dropping to 25th in the overall rankings. Poor performances both domestically and in Europe have increasingly put Mourinho’s position at risk, despite his reputation and extensive experience.

In this context, Ruben Amorim emerges as an ideal alternative. Benfica has long pursued Amorim, viewing him as a symbol of the young, modern coaching generation that fits their long-term development strategy. Previously, Amorim declined the chance to return to Benfica, especially in September when presidential candidate Joao Noronha Lopes openly expressed a desire to bring him back to Estádio da Luz. However, the current situation has changed significantly.

Amorim was dismissed by Manchester United on Monday, just one day after a 1-1 draw with Leeds. Following the match, he made a highly controversial statement asserting his desire to have full control over the technical aspects as head coach, rather than serving as a mere head coach. His remarks, perceived as a direct criticism of sporting director Jason Wilcox and recruitment head Christopher Vivell, escalated internal conflicts to a breaking point.

Insiders say the backstage damage was irreparable. As a result, Amorim left Old Trafford with what is considered the worst record in Manchester United’s Premier League era, with only a 31.9% win rate. Nevertheless, he received a compensation package worth £12 million, making him the most expensive managerial dismissal in the club’s history.
