The Malaysia futsal team has officially named a new head coach following their victory over Vietnam at SEA Games 33.
The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has formally announced the appointment of legend Addie Azwan Zainal as the new head coach of the Malaysian team, succeeding Mr. Rakphol Sainetngam. The previous coach Rakphol decided not to renew his contract after his term ended on December 31, 2025, to return and lead the futsal team of his homeland, Thailand.
At SEA Games 33, Malaysia's futsal team caused a major upset by defeating Vietnam 4-2 and subsequently earning the bronze medal. Since winning silver in 2007, this marks only the second time Malaysia’s futsal team has won a medal at the SEA Games.
Addie Azwan (46 years old) is regarded as the most suitable and deserving candidate for the head coach position. Since August 2023, he has been a key assistant to Coach Rakphol. His deep understanding of the current players and thorough grasp of the football philosophy developed over the past two years make him the optimal choice to maintain stability for the team ahead of major tournaments.
In Malaysia’s futsal history, Addie Azwan is a living legend. Between 2002 and 2010, he set an unprecedented record as the player with the most national team appearances and the greatest scorer in Harimau Malaya’s history. After retiring, he accumulated 15 years of coaching experience, serving as assistant to coaches Maizal Hairi Marzuki and Marcelo Serpa, and also led the national women's futsal team in 2018.
The biggest challenge awaiting new head coach Addie Azwan is the 2026 AFC Futsal Championship Finals, held in Jakarta, Indonesia from January 27 to February 7, 2026. Malaysia is placed in the competitive Group D. According to the schedule, the "Tigers" will face the powerhouse Iran on January 28, Afghanistan on January 30, and conclude the group stage against Saudi Arabia on February 1.
Coach Addie Azwan’s immediate goal is to guide Malaysia into the top two of the group to qualify for the quarterfinals (to be held on February 3). If successful, the team will advance to the semifinals on February 5 and aim for the final on February 7. With his extensive experience and legendary status, Addie Azwan is expected to help Malaysia’s futsal team achieve a breakthrough at the continental level.
