The Spanish Super Cup semi-final clash between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid ignited tensions both on the pitch and through a fierce argument involving Vinicius Junior and manager Diego Simeone.
The Brazilian star had to be restrained by his teammates and the Real Madrid coaching staff after provocations from the Argentine strategist were considered over the line.
Real Madrid secured a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid thanks to goals from Federico Valverde and Rodrygo, advancing directly to the Spanish Super Cup final held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. However, the on-field result was quickly overshadowed by tensions off the pitch, especially the direct confrontation between Vinicius Jr and Diego Simeone.
According to Spanish media, specifically AS, Movistar Plus cameras captured Simeone repeatedly provoking Vinicius from the first half. Notably, the Atletico coach allegedly mentioned Real Madrid president Florentino Perez when addressing the 2000-born forward: "Florentino (Perez) will kick you out of here. Remember where you heard this first."- Simeone said to Vini.
Not stopping there, Simeone further escalated tensions by urging Vinicius to listen to the boos from the stands, where some fans continuously whistled whenever the Brazilian touched the ball. This made the atmosphere at King Abdullah Stadium extremely tense.
The climax occurred when Vinicius was substituted in the second half for Arda Guler. As he left the field, Vinicius reacted angrily toward Atletico Madrid’s technical area. Xabi Alonso along with several Real Madrid players had to intervene to prevent a serious altercation. Referee Busquets Ferrer then issued yellow cards to both Vinicius Jr and Diego Simeone.
After the match, Simeone appeared cold when asked about the incident: “Vini Jr? I have nothing to say. Since my playing days, I’ve always said that what happens on the pitch should stay on the pitch.” However, this explanation failed to calm the wave of criticism from experts and fans alike.
On the other hand, coach Xabi Alonso expressed clear dissatisfaction: "I heard what Simeone said to Vini, and I didn’t like it. That kind of talk is unacceptable; some things crossed the line."
