Despite losing to Barca, Vinicius still reached a remarkable milestone at Real Madrid

Although he was defeated by Barca in the 2026 Spanish Super Cup final, Vinícius Junior managed to leave his mark by equaling a historic record previously held by Cristiano Ronaldo and two other Real Madrid legends.

In the early hours of January 12 (Vietnam time), another emotional chapter of El Clasico unfolded as Real Madrid and Barcelona met in the Spanish Super Cup final for the fourth consecutive year. In this context Real Madrid was trailing 0-1, Vinicius Junior received the ball from midfield, performed an impressive solo run, nutmegged Jules Koundé before delivering a beautiful finish in the 45+2 minute stoppage time to equalize for Los Blancos and simultaneously reach a historic milestone.

With the goal against Barcelona, Vinicius Junior took the lead in Real Madrid’s history for the highest total number of goals and assists in finals. Since joining the royal club from Flamengo in 2018, the Brazilian winger has appeared in 15 finals, scored 9 goals (including the one in the 2026 Spanish Super Cup final) and provided 7 assists, totaling 16 contributions to goals.

During his time at Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo also achieved 16 goal contributions in finals. The Portuguese superstar played 18 finals for Los Blancos, scoring 15 goals and providing 1 assist, which was a pass to Marcelo in the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.

Alongside Ronaldo, Vinicius Junior has now matched the achievements of two other Real Madrid legends, Karim Benzema and Ferenc Puskas. Benzema appeared in 29 finals, while Puskas played 8. All four players currently share the top spot for most goal contributions in finals. Just behind them is Alfredo Di Stefano with 13 contributions in 15 finals.

This means Vinícius has a great chance to continue making history for Real Madrid. With just one more goal or assist in any future final, the Brazilian will hold this record alone.

However, Vinicius Júnior still trails behind Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of success in finals. Both arrived at Real Madrid in the same transfer season but represent very different club legends. While Vinícius is known for his dribbling and creativity, Ronaldo symbolizes an extraordinary goal-scoring efficiency.

Cristiano Ronaldo won 14 out of 18 finals with Real Madrid, including 4 Champions League finals he played in. Ronaldo’s rare losses were in the 2013 Copa del Rey final against Atletico Madrid and three Spanish Super Cup finals (2011 vs Barcelona, 2014 and 2015 vs Atletico), giving him an impressive 77.7% winning rate.

Meanwhile, Vinícius Júnior currently lags behind Ronaldo in final win percentage, despite having played three fewer finals.
