At 16:00 on January 15, 2026, the draw ceremony for the ASEAN Cup 2026 group stage will be held in Jakarta (Indonesia), opening up many exciting scenarios in Southeast Asia’s most prestigious football competition. This year marks the 30th anniversary since its inception, promising a special tournament both in terms of skill and emotion.
Currently, 9 teams have secured direct qualification for AFF Cup 2026 including Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos; the final spot will be decided through a playoff between Brunei and Timor Leste.
Vietnam’s national team, as the reigning champion, is placed in the top seed group along with Thailand. Having the two strongest regional teams separated in the group stage makes the race for qualification less tense and opens the possibility of a reunion in the semifinals or final, a scenario fans eagerly anticipate. Meanwhile, other seed groups like Malaysia – Singapore or Indonesia – Philippines promise groups full of unpredictability, where a single mistake could be costly.
The 10 teams divided into 5 seed groups will be split into 2 groups of 5 teams each, competing in a round-robin format. Each team will play a total of four matches, including two home and two away games.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage, which includes semifinals and finals played over two legs. The away goals rule will not apply, similar to the previous edition.
The ASEAN Cup 2026 is expected to take place from July 24 to August 26, right after the 2026 World Cup, at a time when regional teams have almost no other major tournaments during the year. The home-and-away format in the group stage remains a crucial factor, demanding squad depth and consistent performance. Given this, the ASEAN Cup 2026 is not only a title contest but also a benchmark for the strength and ambition of Southeast Asian football in this new era.
