Coach Philippe Troussier is said to have submitted his application to become the head coach of an African national team at the 2026 World Cup.
According to the Mosaique FM, Coach Philippe Troussier has applied to become the new head coach of the Tunisia national team. The 70-year-old French strategist has extensive experience, having managed several African national teams. Known as the “White Wizard,” he has previously coached Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, South Africa, and Morocco.
Additionally, Philippe Troussier has worked with clubs such as Asec Mimosas in Ivory Coast, FUS Rabat and FAR Rabat in Morocco, and Club Sportif Sfaxien in Tunisia. Notably, during his tenure with Burkina Faso, he led the team to its first-ever semi-final appearance at the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations.
This development comes after Tunisia’s football team suffered a major shock at the Africa Cup of Nations. The national team was eliminated by Mali in the round of 16 following a tense penalty shootout, despite having a numerical advantage for nearly an hour. The match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, and Tunisia lost 2-3 on penalties.
This defeat led to immediate consequences for Coach Sami Trabelsi. The 1968-born manager was dismissed by the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) the very next day, despite having secured Tunisia’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
Since parting ways with the Vietnam national team in 2024, Coach Philippe Troussier has not returned to coaching. Interestingly, the 1955-born coach was once mentioned as a potential candidate for the head coach position of China’s national team, but so far, this remains speculative without any official confirmation.
Conversely, Patrick Kluivert is also being considered for the head coach position of Tunisia’s national team.. Like Troussier, the former Barcelona striker is currently available after his contract with the Indonesian Football Federation ended last October. Other notable candidates include Laurent Blanc and Patrick Vieira.
In the 2026 World Cup, Tunisia will be placed in Group F, where they will face Japan, the Netherlands, and a team advancing from the playoff round. With less than five months until the tournament begins, the FTF is likely to finalize the coaching staff soon to ensure the team is well-prepared for the biggest football event on the planet.
