Coach Xabi Alonso is said to have agreed to take charge of a leading Bundesliga club.
According to BILD, after his contract was terminated by Real Madrid, Xabi Alonso has now begun negotiations to return to coaching with Eintracht Frankfurt.
Sources reveal that Frankfurt's management proactively reached out to Xabi Alonso about the possibility of him taking over the team. This move came immediately after the Europa League champions of the 2021/22 season decided to dismiss coach Dino Toppmoller today, following a series of poor results that dropped the club to seventh place in the Bundesliga standings.
Eintracht Frankfurt’s CEO, Markus Krosche, is reportedly eager to arrange a face-to-face meeting with Alonso, who is currently on vacation after leaving Real Madrid. In Germany, Alonso is highly regarded due to his successful tenure at Bayer Leverkusen. Since taking charge in 2022, Alonso has led Leverkusen to win three major trophies, including notably the Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season, ending the club's 31-year wait for the championship at Bay Arena.
In that debut season, the 2010 World Cup winner guided the team through an unbeaten domestic campaign, secured a domestic double, and reached the Europa League final, where they were defeated by Atalanta in the last match.
Besides Frankfurt, Alonso has also been linked with other clubs such as Tottenham and Manchester United. Meanwhile, Real Madrid continues searching for a permanent head coach after interim manager Alvaro Arbeloa had a shaky start in charge.
Under Arbeloa’s leadership, Real Madrid suffered a humiliating 2-3 defeat to second-division side Albacete in the Copa del Rey.. However, the former fullback managed to help the Royal team secure a 2-0 victory against Levante in La Liga last weekend.
