Bayern Munich overcame Union Saint-Gilloise 2-0 with two goals from Harry Kane, clinching an early qualification to the Champions League knockout rounds while one game remains.
Bayern Munich officially secured their position among the top 8 in the Champions League league phase this season following a 2-0 victory over Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, thus qualifying early for the knockout stage with one match still left. Conversely, this defeat severely jeopardizes the Belgian side’s slim hopes of reaching the playoff round, leaving them in a difficult position heading into the final match.
Despite being heavily favored and expected to “wrap things up quickly” at home in the Allianz Arena, Bayern had a challenging start. The absence of ultras due to UEFA sanctions for flare usage somewhat dampened the stadium atmosphere, which was clearly reflected on the pitch. In the first 30 minutes, the Bavarian team lacked sharpness. Harry Kane’s close-range shot was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen, which was nearly Bayern’s only notable chance during this period.
In contrast, Union Saint-Gilloise created more dangerous opportunities before halftime. Kevin Mac Allister nearly connected with a free kick, while Promise David’s unmarked header forced Manuel Neuer into a fine save. Bayern controlled the game but struggled in the final third, making the 0-0 scoreline at halftime a fair reflection.
However, Bayern’s familiar Champions League pattern quickly unfolded after the break. Early in the second half, Harry Kane confidently finished off a corner delivered by Michael Olise, ending his three-game goalless streak in European competition. Just three minutes later, Kane won and converted a penalty, doubling the home side’s lead.
Things became a bit more complicated when Kim Min-jae received a second yellow card for a non-ball related foul, but Bayern maintained control. The hosts were awarded another penalty in the 80th minute after Kamiel Van de Perre handled the ball, yet Kane missed the chance to complete a hat-trick by hitting the crossbar.
Nevertheless, Union Saint-Gilloise lacked the energy and precision to mount a comeback. Bayern held on to their 2-0 win, extending their unbeaten home run in the Champions League since 2013 and advancing to the knockout stage. For Union, the door to progression is almost closed in their debut Champions League season, especially with a tough challenge against Atalanta in the final match ahead.
