Manchester United is said to have told Bruno Fernandes that they expect him to make his future clear before the World Cup, allowing the club to strategically manage their personnel moving forward.
Transfer rumors have followed the 31-year-old Portuguese star for years. Bruno has attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League, and less than a year ago, he himself acknowledged that leaving Old Trafford was not out of the question.
After coach Ruben Amorim was dismissed, new doubts arose about Bruno’s plans for the summer. Speculation intensified with reports that Man United is considering an ambitious move to sign Chelsea star Cole Palmer.
According to ESPN, Man United is trying to take control of the situation. The Old Trafford club has told their captain that they want Bruno to communicate his personal plans to the club before he heads to the World Cup with the Portuguese national team. The Red Devils will emphasize their desire to keep Bruno, seeing him as a key figure for the future. However, they will also give the former Sporting CP player the freedom to decide his next career step.
Sources reveal that within the club there was some “surprise” when Bruno stated in a December interview that he felt MU wanted him to leave during last summer’s transfer window. Manchester United aims to resolve this issue before the World Cup, so they clearly understand the player’s plans and can execute their transfer strategy accordingly.
Bruno Fernandes’ current contract with Manchester United runs until 2027, leading many to believe he will naturally stay with the club. However, the reality is more complex. According to World Soccer Talk, some English media sources report that the Portuguese midfielder has a £57 million (around $77 million) release clause valid for clubs outside England, which could be activated in the summer 2026 transfer window. This means Bruno holds significant control over his own future, depending on the direction of the project at Old Trafford.
If Bruno maintains this stance, it is highly likely he will remain with Manchester United for at least one more season.
