Inter Miami star Lionel Messi recently received a message urging him to return to play for Barcelona.
Inter Miami is striving to maintain its competitive edge and remain among the top contenders in upcoming seasons, with Lionel Messi still playing a pivotal role in the project, as he has demonstrated clearly in recent years. Nevertheless, rumors about the Argentine superstar’s potential return to Barcelona continue to surface, reigniting a debate many thought had ended.
Victor Font, a businessman and head of the Nosaltres platform as well as a candidate for Barcelona’s presidency, stated that if he wins the election scheduled for March 15, his first move will be to contact Messi to mend the relationship between both parties.
“The first thing I will do if elected is to call Lionel Messi,” Font said publicly. “I have ways to reach him, directly or indirectly. Reconnecting with the club’s greatest legends is an absolute priority. Messi is a part of Barcelona’s history. After winning, we will present our plan to him. Messi deserves a role that matches his legacy.”
Font’s promise comes at a crucial moment in the campaign, as he openly criticizes the current leadership led by Joan Laporta. Font views this election as a referendum between the old model and a new vision for Barcelona, emphasizing that his goal is not merely symbolic but to give Messi a meaningful position within the club.
Having finished second in the 2021 election with nearly 30% of the vote, Font hopes to leverage the deep affection Barcelona members still hold for Messi. Messi’s 2021 departure left a significant mark on fans, and although Font has not specified whether Messi would return as a player, ambassador, or in another capacity, the message is clear: reconnecting with legends is key to rebuilding Barcelona’s future.
The March 15 election is expected to be highly competitive, with Laporta as the main rival, alongside other candidates like Xavier Vilajoana and Marc Ciria. The winner will officially take office as Barcelona president on July 1, 2026.
This event also highlights broader social issues within Barcelona, as many believe members, fan clubs, and local branches increasingly feel disconnected from the club. Font concluded: “This election is not simply about choosing a person, but about selecting a transparent, professional club model that places people at its center.”
