OFFICIAL: AFC issues ruling, Vietnam National Team must pay attention!

AFC has set the date for the 2027 Asian Cup Finals draw, and Vietnam National Team will learn its group assignment.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) today confirmed that the 2027 Asian Cup Finals Draw Ceremony will be held on May 9, 2026, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Originally scheduled for April 11, the event was postponed to ensure full participation of all key stakeholders and participating Member Associations.

This adjustment reflects AFC and the Local Organizing Committee's commitment to hosting a dignified ceremony worthy of the prestige and stature of the continent's premier tournament.

Ranked 99th in the FIFA rankings, Vietnam National Team is almost certain to be placed in Pot 3 for the 2027 Asian Cup Finals, avoiding the previous risk of falling into Pot 4. This is considered a significant advantage, helping Coach Kim Sang Sik and his team to potentially avoid challenging opponents within the same pot like China, Thailand, or Bahrain.

Nevertheless, the risk of landing in a "group of death" still exists for Vietnam National Team. Pot 4 harbors several teams with strong capabilities, notably Indonesia or North Korea. Notably, Indonesia, despite securing direct qualification to the Asian Cup Finals through impressive World Cup qualifying results, remains in Pot 4 due to its lower FIFA ranking, making it a highly dangerous unknown factor.

A similarly difficult scenario as the 2023 Asian Cup could repeat, where Vietnam might share a group with strong teams like Japan, Iraq, and Indonesia. However, with the current squad combining naturalized players, overseas Vietnamese, and experienced pillars like Nguyen Quang Hai or Nguyen Hoang Duc, the goal of advancing deep in the 2027 Asian Cup remains entirely feasible for the Vietnam National Team.

With 23 of the 24 participating teams confirmed, the draw for the 19th 2027 Asian Cup Finals will divide Asia's elite national teams into 6 groups of 4 teams each, revealing exciting matches ahead of this eagerly awaited event, which will be hosted for the first time in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, 2027. The final qualification spot will be determined on June 4, 2026, when Lebanon and Yemen face off to compete for the top spot in Group B.
