Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has received an extra one-game ban, making him unavailable for Saturday's Premier League trip to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The 33-year-old English center-back, who was red-carded in the 2-2 tie with Bournemouth, was already suspended for the Leeds United fixture. The extension of his suspension is due to insulting remarks made towards fourth official Matt Donohue following the ejection, leading to an FA charge for misconduct.

In addition to the one-match ban, Maguire has also been fined £30,000 by the FA. The FA stated in its announcement that Maguire acted improperly after the red card, using insulting language or behavior towards the fourth official. Donohue disclosed in his written statement: "As Maguire left the field, he approached me and shouted, 'You (referees) are a joke. You're all a fucking joke!'"
Maguire's defense statement denied that his comments were aimed at the referees: "Upon being sent off, I did say something like 'it is a fucking joke' as I walked away. However, I assure you that this was not directed at the fourth official or any other referee, and I did not use any insulting language."
Nevertheless, Donohue emphasized that he might have misheard or misremembered Maguire saying "you are a joke," but the United defender definitely yelled "fucking joke" towards the group of officials.
Ultimately, Maguire admitted to misconduct in his statement and apologized for his words. The regulatory committee initially considered imposing a two-match ban, but given various mitigating factors, including Maguire's willingness to admit fault and accept punishment, only a one-game suspension was applied.

Following Maguire's penalty, Manchester United now await the appeal outcome for another center-back, Lisandro Martínez. He was shown a direct red card for violent conduct in the 1-2 loss to Leeds United for pulling opponent striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin. According to regulations, Lisandro faces a three-match ban, missing United's games against Chelsea, Brentford, and Liverpool. Manager Carrick called the decision absurd post-match, and the club has lodged an appeal.
However, the UK's Daily Mail reports that Lisandro's red card verdict is unlikely to be overturned. Manchester United's appeal argues that Lisandro did not forcefully pull the opponent's hair but was merely attempting to gain possession. However, Premier League authorities believe the referee's decision fully complies with the rules. At the season's start, referees clearly informed all Premier League teams that pulling an opponent's hair constitutes violent conduct.
While Lisandro's three-match suspension could potentially be reduced, the chances are slim. Moreover, some within United fear that appealing might worsen the refereeing community's attitude towards the club, possibly putting them in a more disadvantageous position during the upcoming match at Stamford Bridge.
The referee for the Red vs. Blue clash has been confirmed as Michael Oliver. This season, in three matches he has officiated, United have won two and lost one. However, after United's match against Tottenham in 2023, Bruno Fernandes angrily accused him of missing a penalty and demanded that he apologize in the dressing room afterward, as he had done for Wolves' manager. Ultimately, Oliver did not comply.

This means Manchester United will face a shortage of center-backs at Chelsea. Maguire and Lisandro are suspended, while Matthijs de Ligt remains sidelined with a long-term back injury. Carrick only has two young defenders available: 20-year-old Lenny Yoro and 19-year-old Eden Haven. Yoro, a £52 million signing, has been inconsistent and lacks physicality, while Haven has been out of action and hasn't started under the new manager.
If Chelsea secure victory on Saturday, the gap between them and United would narrow to four points, threatening United's hopes of returning to the Champions League. If Carrick is concerned about the young center-backs' experience, he could consider two alternative plans.
Full-backs Luke Shaw and Mazraoui have played as center-backs under manager Ruben Amorim. One of them could fill in centrally alongside Yoro, while the other would join Diogo Dalot to cover the left and right full-back positions. Both possess extensive experience, an element lacking in Yoro and Haven.
Casemiro has also temporarily played as a center-back before, but his role in midfield is more critical, and Carrick is unlikely to move him back. Although Kobbie Mainoo is likely to return for the Chelsea clash, if "Fat Tiger" (Casemiro) plays in defense, the academy star's partner would only be Ugarte. Notably, after Lisandro's red card on Monday, Ugarte briefly replaced him in central defense, but Carrick is unlikely to start the Uruguayan midfielder as a center-back!

Manchester United also has a defender, Taylor Fredericksen, who was utilized under former manager Ten Hag. He was on the bench in last week's match against Bournemouth and captained the team in the U21 Premier League International Cup match against Real Madrid. However, since United's surprising League Cup loss to second-tier Grimsby Town in August, Fredericksen has only had one substitute appearance, playing two minutes, and would most likely serve as a backup.
