Neuer candidly discusses the error handling incident, while emphasizing the spirit of overcoming adversity that helped Bayern defeat Real Madrid.
Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer experienced one of the most emotional matches of his career as Bayern Munich defeated Real Madrid 4-3 in the Champions League semifinal. From the very first seconds, the Bayern captain made a serious mistake, directly leading to the earliest conceded goal in the club's history in this competition.
Just 35 seconds later, a misplaced pass by Neuer became a "gift" for Arda Güler to score. “It was a difficult situation; I intended to pass the ball to the right for Stani [Josip Stanišić], but executed it poorly. Simply a bad pass,” Neuer admitted. This mistake also became a psychological turning point, forcing Bayern to play in a state of high alert against an extremely sharp opponent.
“That was clearly a terrible start, but I had to put it behind me and continue playing,” the 40-year-old goalkeeper added, showing the composure of a seasoned leader. The way he reacted after the mistake became a major highlight of the match, as Bayern maintained their game state and staged a dramatic comeback. This also is a crucial detail showing that Neuer's role lies not only in errors, but also in his ability to self-adjust.
Not only making an error in the first goal, Neuer was also questioned in the second situation when Güler scored from a free kick. However, he candidly stated: “No, that was an excellent shot, both in terms of ball power.” Meanwhile, Sporting Director Max Eberl also objectively observed: “In football, today you are a hero, tomorrow you could become a villain because of one mistake.”
Nevertheless, Neuer still managed to leave his mark with a decisive save against Kylian Mbappé in the 55th minute, keeping the score at 2-3. “That was a decisive play. Perhaps it was one of my 'classic' saves,” he confidently shared. This play is seen as a turning point that helped Bayern maintain hope before completing their comeback.
Bayern's leadership also did not undervalue Neuer because of the mistake. CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen affirmed his future depends on his own personal decision, while Eberl emphasized the club will not make a contract extension decision based solely on one incident. Neuer's contract currently expires at the end of the season.
According to German media, the likelihood of Neuer extending for another year is quite high, though his playing time may decrease. Backup Jonas Urbig is expected to play more, in the generational transition plan. Still, with the composure he displayed, Neuer continues to prove he is not ready to leave the top stage.
