Recently, The Sun reported that Chelsea's two co-owners, Eghbali and Boehly, have serious disagreements regarding stadium expansion or rebuilding. This internal boardroom dispute not only concerns the club's future stadium choice but may also profoundly impact its overall development strategy. If Eghbali prevails, Chelsea will remain at Stamford Bridge and plan to increase the stadium capacity to 55,000; whereas Boehly prefers building a new modern stadium nearby with a capacity of 60,000.

The current Stamford Bridge capacity is 42,000, significantly lower than other top European clubs' home stadiums, which disadvantages the club in long-term revenue competition. Therefore, discussions about expansion or rebuilding have been ongoing for a long time. Boehly's proposal is to completely abandon Stamford Bridge and invest in building a new 60,000-capacity stadium in southwest London, which would greatly enhance Chelsea's ticket revenue and commercial opportunities. However, the new stadium plan faces many challenges, including site selection, construction permits, financing, and time costs. This massive project is expected to take at least five years to complete, during which the club would need to find a temporary home, bringing a series of inconveniences and risks.

In contrast, Eghbali favors a more pragmatic approach. He plans to invest £1.5 billion to renovate Stamford Bridge, increasing its capacity to 55,000 while preserving the existing site and the club's historical connection. Eghbali's proposal includes modernizing the West Stand but not completely demolishing the current stadium. The advantage of this plan is that it reduces the time the team is away from its home ground, minimizing risks of team and fan disruption. The expansion might require the team to temporarily leave Stamford Bridge for two years, but compared to the five years needed for a rebuild, this is clearly a shorter transition period.

From a financial perspective, Boehly's plan could deliver a brand-new modern stadium, but its construction costs are extremely high and involve complex financing issues. Meanwhile, a prolonged absence from Stamford Bridge would also affect the team's operational revenue and brand loyalty. Chelsea, as a historic club, has Stamford Bridge as part of its brand identity; leaving this stadium might weaken the emotional connection with fans. Therefore, Eghbali's renovation plan is more stable, as it can meet the need for increased capacity while reducing the disruption period for the team and fans.

It is noteworthy that this internal conflict among Chelsea's owners may soon reach a resolution. An insider revealed: "There is growing awareness that the new stadium construction plan is not feasible, and Boehly might soon leave the club." If Boehly exits, Eghbali's proposal will dominate, and the plan to stay at Stamford Bridge for renovation and expansion will accelerate.

Long-term, Eghbali's plan aligns better with Chelsea's current practical needs and development strategy. First, retaining Stamford Bridge maintains the club's tradition and historical heritage while enhancing commercial potential through gradual expansion. Second, reducing the time away from the home stadium helps the team maintain competitiveness, avoiding difficulties from being "homeless" for too long. Although the expanded capacity (55,000) is still lower than the 60,000 in Boehly's plan, it is a reasonable compromise under the premise of maintaining stable club operations.

Frankly, Eghbali's Stamford Bridge expansion plan appears more practical and feasible, preserving the club's tradition and brand value while increasing stadium capacity. Boehly, despite his ambition, faces high risks and uncertainties with the new stadium construction, making his proposal lack broad support. If Eghbali wins, Chelsea could complete the stadium upgrade within a reasonable timeframe, thereby strengthening its position in the Premier League and European football.
