Inter Milan vs Cagliari is a key fixture for both clubs' ambitions: the hosts pursue the title, and the guests battle to stay in the league. Additionally, it presents a fascinating clash between the two Esposito brothers: Francesco 'Pio' (born 2005) representing Inter and Sebastiano (2002) playing for Cagliari.
This is not their first time facing each other from opposing sides. In fact, Pio's first goal for Inter (also his first Serie A career goal) was scored right in front of Sebastiano, securing Inter's 2-0 victory at Cagliari's stadium on September 27, 2025.
Actually, both brothers are currently Inter players, having grown up in the club's youth academy. Just about three months prior, they both participated in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and even substituted each other during Inter's match against Fluminense. While Pio was retained with high expectations after finishing as runner-up in the Serie B scoring charts in the 2024-25 season, Sebastiano was loaned to Cagliari to gain more playing opportunities. They also have an older brother, Salvatore (born 2000), who plays for Sampdoria in Serie B.
While Salvatore is a central midfielder, both Sebastiano and Pio are forwards. Sebastiano was even considered Inter's most promising young talent for many years, debuted in the Champions League at age 16, made his Serie A debut and scored his first goal at 17, and was nominated for the "Golden Boy" award in 2020. However, this striker's development faced numerous setbacks due to failing to secure a spot at Inter and being loaned out repeatedly. From 2021 onward, he has moved through eight different clubs. Yet, that uncertain journey will end after this season, as he will officially become a Cagliari player under a mandatory purchase clause.

The Esposito Brothers in Inter's colors at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup
Contrary to his older brother's struggles, Pio was only sent to Spezia for two seasons and, after diligent "training," returned and established a key role at Inter. Everything has unfolded dreamily for the youngest Esposito: He debuted and scored in every competition Inter participated in (Serie A, Champions League, Italian Cup), then debuted for the Italian national team and shone with 3 goals in just his first 5 matches. Pio's future at Inter is secure, as he is regarded as one of two players Inter would not sell at any price, alongside captain Lautaro Martinez.
This can be considered a successful season for both brothers. They have each played 30 matches and scored 6 goals in Serie A. Sebastiano leads in minutes played (averaging 73 minutes per match compared to Pio's 43), so in terms of efficiency, he is less productive than his younger brother. However, his impact on Cagliari's collective performance is significantly greater than Pio's role at Inter. Sebastiano also has more assists than Pio (5-3), resulting from his deeper involvement in playmaking rather than just finishing. Of course, the quality of surrounding teammates must also be considered. In this regard, Pio clearly benefits from Inter's caliber, while Sebastiano often struggles with fewer opportunities provided. This was evident in their encounter half a year ago. Pio scored shortly after coming on, while Sebastiano had a "dry" match.
The parents of the two brothers will certainly be present in the San Siro stands tonight. Who will they cheer for? A win for Inter brings the youngest closer to his first career title, but a win for Cagliari means the second son strengthens his team's relegation survival. Perhaps a draw with both brothers "finding the net" would be the most perfect outcome for the Esposito family.
