Serie A: Napoli falls to Lazio, AS Roma keeps Champions League hopes alive

Round 33 of Serie A 2025/26 saw Napoli's disappointing slip-up in the championship chase, as Roma clung to their hopes of earning a European cup berth.

At home, Napoli entered the match hosting Lazio aiming to secure all three points to chase Inter Milan. However, the host team was quickly dealt a "cold shower" in the 6th minute when Matteo Cancellieri easily tapped in from close range to open the scoring.

Despite pushing forward to attack, Napoli faced significant difficulties against Lazio's annoying defensive counter-attacking style. In the 31st minute, the visitors were awarded a penalty, but Mattia Zaccagni couldn't beat goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic. In the second half, Lazio still capitalized well on opportunities and doubled the lead in the 56th minute thanks to Toma Basic.

Losing 0-2 at home, Napoli nearly "raised the white flag" in the title race, trailing Inter by 12 points with only 5 rounds remaining in the season.

In another development, Roma staged a comeback to draw 1-1 against Atalanta BC at the Olimpico. The visitors took an early lead thanks to Nikola Krstovic's goal following a defensive mistake by Roma.

The home team created significant pressure in the first half, but only near the end did they find the equalizer through Mario Hermoso. In the second half, Roma continued to attack relentlessly, but goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi played excellently to secure one point for Atalanta.

This draw result allows Roma to maintain their position in the Champions League qualification group, trailing the top 4 by only 2 points but having played one more match.
