In the current summer transfer period, Manchester United is avoiding reliance on a single option for midfield acquisitions, instead engaging several targets at once.

At this moment, the summer transfer window hasn't even started, but United intends to secure two midfielders initially, then address other areas. The Red Devils have been linked with numerous high-profile midfield stars and have essentially finalized their first summer signing—Atalanta's Ederson.
Manchester United's deal to sign Ederson for approximately £38 million is just a matter of time, and the transfer is likely to be completed before the World Cup begins.
According to UK outlet "GIVEMESPORT," United transfer officials have flown to Italy for final negotiations with Atalanta over the player's transfer. However, their trip may not be solely about finalizing Ederson's move.
As transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reveals, United management is also meeting Sandro Tonali's agent in Italy, aiming to facilitate another midfield signing.
As is well known, Newcastle United's Tonali has long been on Manchester United's shortlist. However, some believe that Newcastle's asking price and the player's wage demands are too high, making a deal difficult for United.
Nonetheless, this does not prevent United from contacting Tonali as a contingency. Romano says: "United's approach is to send a delegation to Italy to discuss multiple issues. Don't forget, for example, Tonali's agent is also in Italy. They have many things to negotiate, such as selling their own players in the summer window."
Napoli's qualification for the Champions League triggers a mandatory €44 million buyout clause for Rasmus Højlund, who was on loan from Manchester United. Additionally, United players like Joshua Zirkzee and Manuel Ugarte are attracting interest from Italian clubs such as Roma and Juventus.

Romano adds: "So, United has held several meetings. We know they have always been active in the Italian market."
According to Italian outlet "Calciomercato," Manchester United is ready to go all out to sign Tonali, with the 26-year-old Italian on his way to joining the Red Devils. Of course, Italian media often exaggerate, so this should not be taken at face value.
However, if United abandons the pursuit of Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, then Tonali becomes their sole focus. His asking price is around £86 million, compared to Anderson's reportedly over £100 million fee.
The UK's Daily Mirror reports that United is prepared to drop their plan to sign Anderson. This would free up funds to bring in Ederson and Tonali. According to GMS sources, United intends to invest between £140 million and £150 million to acquire these two new players to bolster the midfield.
The Sun's Manchester United correspondent Samuel Luckhurst claims that the Red Devils are ready to sign a marquee midfielder, with a deal close to £100 million. However, the club's constant emphasis that Tonali is too expensive is a "play hard to get" strategy to prevent Newcastle from raising the price further.
Newcastle will not be in European competition next season, so to avoid financial fair play violations, they must sell one or two high-quality players this summer. However, Anthony Gordon's €80 million transfer to Barcelona has significantly boosted Newcastle's finances.
The Magpies also have another player, English left-back Lewis Hall, who is a potential target for Manchester United. The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell says: "We've recently seen rumors about Hall, a player who interests United. Gordon's situation may be relevant, as the deal shows what Newcastle expects for these players and what offers they would accept for Hall, Tonali, and others."

Regarding whether United can take any player from St James' Park, Whitwell predicts: "It feels like Newcastle will have to make some tough selling decisions to rebuild their squad. Like Gordon, Hall wasn't always a starter under Eddie Howe towards the end of the season. Manchester United might see this as an opportunity."
