The strong bond between Xabi Alonso and Arda Guler is causing a stir in England, particularly with Chelsea reportedly requiring more inventiveness in their forward line for the upcoming campaign.
Despite not having formally taken charge at Chelsea, Xabi Alonso has already stirred interest in England, with leaks from Spain indicating he keeps in constant touch with Arda Guler. The Turkish midfielder had a tough time at Real Madrid, but Alonso was the one who restored his belief and important role at the Bernabeu.
Alonso managed Real Madrid for under half a year before his dismissal in January, but that short span sufficed to forge an exceptional bond with Guler. British media suggest Chelsea could exploit this link to pursue a significant transfer down the line. Even more striking, Guler has openly acknowledged that he continues to exchange messages with his old coach.
During a chat with TRT Spor, the 21-year-old talent revealed: “The fact is, we share a fantastic bond. I felt as if he handed me the keys. That’s precisely what I sought. Now he’s at Chelsea. I wish him all the best. Naturally, we keep messaging each other.”
Prior to Alonso's arrival at the Bernabeu, Guler had been frequently rumored to depart Real Madrid because of insufficient game time under Carlo Ancelotti. Certain reports even suggested that the Turkish star felt 'invisible' within the Los Blancos lineup. Yet, everything shifted rapidly once Alonso took the helm at the Spanish giants.
Over his initial two La Liga campaigns, Guler started just 24 matches combined. However, in the latest campaign alone, that figure rose to 25 starts owing to Alonso's faith, despite a late-season injury that sidelined him for a period. This turnaround is regarded as strong evidence of the Spanish coach's prowess in nurturing young talent.
Guler went on to lavish praise on Alonso as he revisited the moment following the clash with Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinal: “Following the game versus Bayern Munich in the Champions League last eight, he messaged me saying he was extremely proud of me. Reading that made me truly happy. I pray God paves the way for him. I believe he’s an outstanding manager.”
Beyond his inspiring methods, Alonso is also widely praised for his tactical acumen and player communication. Guler disclosed: “When he summons you to his office and breaks down the tactics, it’s nearly impossible not to be won over. He knows precisely what you’re capable of. He fully grasps what he can offer you.”
The Turkish playmaker also remembered the first game under Alonso's tenure: “Ahead of my debut, when I was in the starting eleven, that morning he said to me: ‘I want you to have more touches than anyone else on the right flank.’ Hearing that, you’re pretty much instantly persuaded.” Such remarks only reinforce the belief among British media that Chelsea will hold a significant edge should Guler ever depart Real Madrid.
