A reporter from Vietnam News Agency in Cairo noted that the game's only goal came in the 65th minute, when Mostafa Ziko scored with a close-range header, sealing Egypt's victory just two weeks before the opening match of the 2026 World Cup. Egypt's head coach Hossam Hassan made a few minor adjustments to his usual starting lineup, giving Mohamed Abdelmonem a chance to return after a long-term injury, while Ahmed Sayed "Zizo" replaced Mohamed Salah, who was unable to join the squad in time for the match.

Manchester City striker Omar Marmoush was the most impressive player in the first half, creating several dangerous chances though he couldn't find the net before the break. In the second half, coach Hassan's personnel changes proved effective. Egypt's defense held firm against Russia's counterattacks, with veteran goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy standing out by saving a free kick from Anton Miranchuk in the closing minutes.

This victory carries symbolic meaning for coach Hassan's team, coming eight years after Russia defeated Egypt 3-1 in Group A of the 2018 World Cup.

Egypt will travel to the United States for their final friendly against Brazil on June 6 in Cleveland, Ohio, before starting their World Cup journey with a match against Belgium on June 15 in Seattle. The Pharaohs are in Group G alongside Belgium, Iran, and New Zealand.
