Top-of-the-table clash in China League One ends in a draw between Guangzhou and Shenzhen

Reported by Wang Wei On the evening of May 29, the 10th round of the 2026 China League One season brought a top-of-the-table battle, as Guangzhou Leopards faced league leaders Shenzhen Youngsters at Yuexiushan Stadium. In this pivotal clash affecting the top position and promotion landscape, Guangzhou Leopards on home ground unleashed 13 shots and created numerous clear chances, but their finishing let them down. The two sides battled for 90 minutes and settled for a 0-0 draw. After the match, Shenzhen Youngsters continued to lead the standings with 22 points, two points ahead of second-placed Guangzhou Leopards, who have now gone three league games without a win. In another concurrent match, Nantong Zhiyun defeated Ningbo away from home, sitting third with 19 points, just behind the top two teams.

The pre-match standings already foreshadowed the intensity of this game. Shenzhen Youngsters had won three consecutive league matches and topped the table with 21 points; Guangzhou Leopards followed closely with 19 points. Playing at home, they had to win to overtake the leader. This six-point battle directly influenced the promotion race of the season.

From the kick-off, both teams quickly entered a high-intensity contest with rapid transitions and a fiery derby atmosphere. The home side, Guangzhou Leopards, took the initiative early, applying constant pressure in the midfield and forward areas and repeatedly testing Shenzhen's compact defense. In the 12th minute, Hou Yu unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box, which was brilliantly saved by Shenzhen goalkeeper Liu Haoran. Later, Tudolie and Nikon launched successive attacks. In the 25th minute, Nikon delivered a precise cross, and Tudolie's close-range volley was again denied by a sharp Liu Haoran.

Shenzhen Youngsters, on the other hand, focused on solid defense and counterattacks, playing a relatively conservative offensive rhythm. They struggled to create meaningful threats up front, and the first half ended 0-0. After the break, Guangzhou Leopards continued their dominant offensive pressure, besieging the opponent's penalty area. Foreign import Kamara repeatedly used his speed to break through the defense and created several dangerous scoring opportunities, but his two excellent attempts were saved by Liu Haoran's outstanding reflexes.

Throughout the match, Guangzhou Leopards completely controlled the tempo, held the advantage in possession, and recorded 13 shots with 5 on target, overwhelming their opponents in many attacking statistics. In contrast, Shenzhen Youngsters managed only 5 shots, none on target. As their fitness declined in the second half, their ball possession decreased sharply, and they often lost possession quickly after winning it back, putting them on the back foot. However, thanks to a resilient defensive system, they kept a clean sheet and fought hard for a draw against a strong opponent.

After the match, Guangzhou Leopards head coach Feng Feng said, "We made targeted tactical adjustments today, focusing on strengthening our defensive structure. Looking at the whole game, our defense was very successful, barely allowing the opponent any clear scoring chances. All players showed great determination and played with a tough style." Feng also commented on the offense: "We created a lot of chances in attack, but our finishing efficiency was poor. The players need to rediscover their shooting touch as soon as possible."

Regarding squad rotation, Feng praised the performance of two new starters: "We made adjustments at center-back and left wing-back. Liu Langzhou and Liu Bin were changes in the starting lineup, and they played very well. Liu Langzhou showed his fighting spirit and characteristics, while Liu Bin, being left-footed, helped with better distribution on the left side, which benefited Kamara's breakthrough. The rotation at these positions achieved its tactical purpose, and the players performed excellently."

Shenzhen Youngsters head coach Ramiro acknowledged the team's overall performance, calling it an extremely tough battle. "Facing a strong opponent, we delivered a high-quality defensive performance and executed our training tactics in attack, maintaining a relatively balanced offensive and defensive structure." He also honestly admitted the team's shortcomings: "We lacked possession time today, and in the second half we repeatedly regained the ball only to lose it quickly, putting us in a passive situation. Football is about details; our opponents are improving, and we must also polish our details and make up for our deficiencies."

Beyond the intense derby atmosphere, a warm moment emerged after the match, easing the tension. Guangzhou Leopards captain Liao Junjian and Shenzhen Youngsters foreign import Rodriguez, who had played together for years at Mezhou Hakka, exchanged jerseys after the final whistle. Former teammates fought hard for their respective clubs on the pitch, but afterwards shared a touching gesture of mutual respect, becoming the most heartwarming scene of this high-intensity derby.
