Why is this year's Champions League final scheduled for an earlier time slot?

The alteration of the kickoff time by UEFA is generating considerable buzz, with the Champions League final between Arsenal and PSG set to occur much earlier than the long-standing tradition.

The Champions League final between Arsenal and PSG at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary, will kick off at 11:00 PM on May 30th tonight instead of the usual 2:00 AM (early morning of May 31st). This marks the first time in years that Europe's most important club-level match is being played significantly earlier, sparking widespread debate among fans.

UEFA actually confirmed this news last August. According to European football's governing body, the schedule change is part of a plan to enhance the experience for spectators, teams, and host cities. Notably, UEFA believes this decision is not solely about professional or television considerations, but also aims at providing practical benefits for fans. The reasoning behind this particular change has become a hot topic ahead of kickoff.

According to UEFA, pushing the start time from 2:00 AM to 11:00 PM late evening is intended to "enhance the overall match-day experience for fans, teams, and the host city" by optimizing organization and logistics. This is seen as a suitable move in a context where an increasing number of supporters have to travel long distances to watch European finals.

One of the biggest benefits UEFA emphasizes is transportation. With the match ending earlier, fans will have more options for public transport, especially those who need to return to another country or city the same night. This significantly reduces the logistical pressure that often arises after late-night finals.

Additionally, UEFA also believes that the host city will benefit economically. With the match ending earlier, supporters have more time to engage in celebrations, entertainment, and use local services. In the case of Budapest, this is seen as an opportunity for the city to maximize revenue from tens of thousands of visitors arriving for the match.

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin stated: "With this change, we place the fan experience at the heart of all our plans. The UEFA Champions League final is the pinnacle of the football season, and the new kickoff time will make the event more accessible, more inclusive, and have a greater impact on everyone involved."

He further emphasized: "While the 2:00 AM kickoff time is suitable for midweek matches, playing earlier on a weekend means the match will end earlier — regardless of whether there is extra time or a penalty shootout. This allows fans the opportunity to enjoy the rest of the evening with friends and family, while also reflecting on the most memorable match of the season."

This viewpoint also receives support from the Football Supporters Europe (FSE). Executive Director Ronan Evain commented: "This is a welcome step for those attending the match in person, and we fully support it." He stressed further that the earlier kickoff time reduces travel pressure, facilitates day trips, and continues to prioritize fans in the organization of UEFA finals.
