Following Harry Kewell's remark that HAGL wasn't playing football, Le Quang Trai skillfully countered by referencing Arsenal to illustrate differing tactical approaches.
HAGL staged one of the most impressive comebacks of the round when defeating Hanoi FC 3-1 at Pleiku Stadium. This victory not only secured the Mountain City team's survival in the league one round early but also made the V.League medal race more unpredictable. However, the post-match spotlight fell on the subtle rebuttal from coach Le Quang Trai against controversial remarks from the opponent.
In the post-match press conference, coach Harry Kewell expressed dissatisfaction with HAGL's approach to the game. The Australian manager stated: “I congratulate HAGL on getting a good result. They played a style that isn't exactly football, but still congratulations. I regret that Hanoi Club couldn't make use of simple chances to finish the game.
HAGL had three chances and converted all three. I hope we won't face a Malaysian referee again, hopefully a Vietnamese referee. I apologize to the Hanoi fans who traveled a long and tiring journey here, I hope they have a safe trip back”.
These comments quickly drew attention because they came right after Hanoi FC lost their lead and suffered a comeback defeat in the second half. Nevertheless, Le Quang Trai chose not to respond harshly. Instead, he offered a perspective on the differences in squad quality and tactical execution among teams.
The HAGL manager shared: “That is the approach of each club, each coach. For example, in last night's UEFA Champions League final, Arsenal also had to play like... us, because Arsenal faced a team that is heavily invested. HAGL uses its own academy players, young players, so naturally we have to choose a playing style that matches our quality. As for Hanoi, their quality speaks for itself; they invest in their squad to compete for the title”.
The statement by coach Le Quang Trai is seen as a clever rebuttal but full of weight. Instead of denying the opponent's comments, he emphasized that every team must choose a playing style suited to its resources. With a squad relying mainly on young players trained in their own academy, HAGL is forced to prioritize efficiency and rationality in each match.
Speaking about his team's emotional victory, coach Le Quang Trai said: “I think you have seen many matches like this before. It was a very emotional game; I had many scenarios in my mind, but I didn't imagine this one. I am very happy, thank you to the players and everyone.
In football, when I touch a nerve, instincts and determination become stronger on the pitch. I believe my players have ability but were a bit lacking in confidence in the first half. When they fell behind, they had nothing left to lose. They regrouped and went out to fight. I'm very glad that Gia Bao started the equalizer and then scored. I thank the fans for their support, which gave the team motivation to fight”.
