U19 Vietnam will step into the match against U19 Timor-Leste determined to take all three points and gain an edge in the race at the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship. Despite facing considerable challenges in squad preparation, coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's side is still regarded as superior to their opponent due to their technical foundation and international experience.
To get ready for this year's tournament, U19 Vietnam has undergone fairly thorough preparations with a training period extending from late April. Notably, the young Vietnamese team also completed a 10-day training camp in Japan, where they faced quality opposition such as U20 and U22 teams from Japanese universities and the B team of Shimizu S-Pulse. These matches allowed the squad to accumulate experience and refine their tactical approaches ahead of the official competition.
However, U19 Vietnam also encounters significant hurdles as several key players are absent for various reasons. This somewhat impacts both the squad's strength and the consistency of their play. Nevertheless, coach Yutaka Ikeuchi remains optimistic, stating that the current players are ready both technically and mentally to pursue high achievements.
On the other side, U19 Timor-Leste is no longer an easy opponent as in the past. In recent years, Timor-Leste's youth football has shown remarkable progress with an energetic style, strong fighting spirit, and better organization. This development has enabled them to frequently cause problems for rivals across Southeast Asia.
Although they have won all four recent head-to-head matches against U19 Timor-Leste, U19 Vietnam must not be complacent. At the youth level, squad dynamics shift rapidly and any surprise is possible. If they play to their full potential, control the game well, and efficiently convert created chances, U19 Vietnam has solid grounds for victory. However, this is likely to be no easy game against a Timor-Leste side that has clearly improved over time.
