According to a VNA correspondent in Africa, after winning the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and delivering impressive performances in recent World Cups, Senegal enters the tournament in North America no longer as an “unknown quantity.”

The West African team is regarded as one of the African representatives most capable of going deep, even expected to replicate the historic run of the 2002 World Cup. This confidence is bolstered by a blend of seasoned experience and rising youth. Midfielder Pape Gueye recently stated that the whole team carries the ambition to go as far as possible, with the squad’s spirit at a high level ahead of departure.

In the squad announced by coach Pape Thiaw on May 20, an experienced core continues to serve as the backbone. Names like Sadio Mane, Kalidou Koulibaly, Édouard Mendy, and Idrissa Gana Gueye remain the foundation that helps Senegal maintain its identity and stability in major tournaments. In goal, Édouard Mendy remains the first choice thanks to his extensive international experience and serves as a defensive leader.

The two backup options are Mory Diaw and Yehvann Diouf. Senegal’s defense is still considered one of the strongest in Africa, led by captain Koulibaly alongside Moussa Niakhaté, a center-back who brings effective tackling and cover. Notably, the inclusion of young faces such as Mamadou Sarr and El Hadji Malick Diouf shows a clear generational transition underway.

The midfield is where coach Pape Thiaw expects a balance between experience and creativity. Idrissa Gana Gueye continues to play the controlling role, while younger names like Lamine Camara, Pape Matar Sarr, and Habib Diarra are gradually taking on greater responsibilities. Among them, Lamine Camara is considered one of the most promising talents in African football today.

Up front, even at 34, Sadio Mane remains the central figure in the attacking system. Supporting him are Nicolas Jackson, Ismaïla Sarr, and Iliman Ndiaye—players who are competing in Europe’s top leagues, bringing pace and the ability to create breakthroughs. The presence of young talents like Assane Diao and Ibrahim Mbaye gives Senegal additional tactical options.

Experts assess that Senegal possesses one of the most balanced squads among African representatives at the 2026 World Cup, with a solid defensive foundation, an energetic midfield, and a fast-paced attack. However, major challenges lie in the age of some key players and the psychological pressure in decisive matches. Senegal’s goal is not just to advance from the group stage, but also to recreate the historic feat of reaching the quarterfinals as in the 2002 World Cup.

In the face of many strong opponents, the faith from home fans remains immense. With a roster rich in international experience alongside a strongly emerging young generation, the “Teranga Lions” step into the 2026 World Cup with a desire not only to represent Senegal but also to carry the pride of African football on the global stage.
