Malaysia U19's coach openly expresses ambitions following a flawless debut.

U19 Malaysia had an impressive opening at the 2026 Southeast Asian U19 Championship. by defeating U19 Singapore 3-0, gaining a considerable edge in the race for a semi-final spot. After the game, Coach Nafuzi Zain expressed clear satisfaction with his players' performance, particularly considering the brief preparation period before traveling to Indonesia for the competition.

On the Teladan pitch, U19 Malaysia swiftly showcased their efficiency. Following an early phase of testing the opposition, the team in yellow capitalized on set pieces to create a difference. Arif Aiman opened the scoring at minute 21, then Abid Safaraz doubled the lead late in the first half. In the second half, Tengku Hasyri also got on the scoresheet, securing a dominant 3-0 win for Malaysia's young side.

After the match, Coach Nafuzi Zain stated: "We had a brief preparation period before arriving in Indonesia for this match, so I am pleased with the players' performance," the coach said. He commended his team's tactical execution and ability to convert opportunities to earn a full three points in the opening game. He also stressed: "It's a good win. We controlled the game and found the net. This will boost the players' confidence for the coming matches. But we cannot afford to be overconfident against Brunei."

Even though Brunei recently endured a crushing 0-9 loss to U19 Thailand, the U19 Malaysia coach remained very cautious. He observed: "Brunei had a heavy loss to Thailand, so they will likely be more defensive from now on, but we will prepare for them and we cannot take them lightly." In Coach Nafuzi's view, the team aims to stay focused and secure early qualification ahead of the challenging match against U19 Thailand scheduled later.

Beyond being pleased with the outcome, Coach Nafuzi also praised the young Malaysian players' eagerness to absorb tactical instructions. He stated: "The players seemed to quickly understand what I wanted from them and produced the results". Furthermore, he commended the entire team's training attitude and professionalism during the brief pre-tournament preparation phase.

With U19 Indonesia also beating U19 Myanmar 3-0 and U19 Thailand crushing U19 Brunei 9-0, the competition in the 2026 Southeast Asian U19 Championship is heating up. The win over Singapore gives U19 Malaysia a strong start and serves as a warning to other contenders. Yet, as Coach Nafuzi stated: "Although we started with a victory, there is still a long road ahead in both offense and defense, but we are in a good spot to face the last two games."
