According to a Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Africa, the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions will make their first World Cup appearance since the 2014 tournament. The AFCON triumph has injected new energy into the team and strengthened the belief that the "Elephants" can go further than their three previous appearances, all of which ended in the group stage. Speaking before the tournament, coach Emerse Faé expressed strong optimism about his team's chances. He stated that Côte d'Ivoire should not limit its ambitions and can aim for major achievements at the World Cup.
Although they no longer boast world-class superstars, Côte d'Ivoire is now considered a well-balanced squad with youthful energy. Up front, players such as Amad Diallo, Simon Adingra, Nicolas Pepe, and young talent Yan Diomande are expected to provide creative spark. The team has also been significantly reinforced by the addition of two players who previously represented French youth teams, Ange-Yoan Bonny and Elye Wahi, after they completed their nationality transfer. In midfield, captain Franck Kessie, alongside Ibrahim Sangare and Seko Fofana, continues to serve as the backbone of the team's play. Meanwhile, the defense is built around young center-back Ousmane Diomande, one of the highest-rated defenders in African football today.
Before launching their World Cup campaign, Côte d'Ivoire will play a notable friendly against France on June 4. This is seen as a crucial test for coach Faé to refine the squad and evaluate his players' competitiveness before they face the real challenges in North America.
In the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, Côte d'Ivoire is placed in Group E alongside Germany, Ecuador, and Curacao, with matches scheduled against Ecuador on June 14, Germany on June 20, and Curacao on June 25.
Combining experience, youth, and the confidence gained from winning the African title in 2024, Côte d'Ivoire is expected to be one of the most noteworthy African representatives at the 2026 World Cup. The immediate goal for the "Elephants" is to clear the group stage for the first time, thereby writing a new chapter in the World Cup history of this West African nation.
