VFF reacts to U19 Vietnam's 5-star victory

The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has issued congratulations to U19 Vietnam following their 5-0 thrashing of Myanmar, which has provisionally placed them at the head of Group A in the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship with six points from two matches.

U19 Vietnam continues to display impressive form at the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship as they defeated U19 Myanmar by a heavy 5-0 scoreline in the second match of Group A. Immediately after the victory, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) updated the result and praised the convincing performance of coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's squad, while also acknowledging that the young team has temporarily climbed to the top of the group standings with a maximum of 6 points.

In the match played at Sumatera Utara Main Stadium, U19 Vietnam started with great initiative against an opponent rated higher than U19 Timor Leste. Coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's players constantly applied pressure on Myanmar's goal, forcing the opposing defense to work hard. After missing several chances, Tan Dung broke the deadlock in the 28th minute with a precise header from a corner kick situation.

The opening goal gave U19 Vietnam more confidence. Before the end of the first half, Cong Hau made his mark with a neat finish inside the penalty area, extending the lead to 2-0. This match saw the young striker continue his high form following a hat-trick against U19 Timor Leste in the opening game.

In the second half, U19 Vietnam showed no signs of slowing down. In the 49th minute, Cong Hau provided a good assist for Van Bach to score the third goal. Then, in the 62nd minute, the same forward won a penalty after being fouled inside the box. From the spot, Duy Khang converted successfully, making it 4-0 for the red-shirted team.

U19 Vietnam will face hosts Indonesia in a decisive match for the top spot in the group.

Despite heavy rain in the final minutes, U19 Vietnam maintained constant pressure. In the 84th minute, substitute Thien Phu rose high to head in from a corner kick, sealing a 5-0 victory. This goal concluded a match in which U19 Vietnam completely dominated both the play and attacking effectiveness.

With two consecutive wins, U19 Vietnam now holds 6 points with an outstanding goal difference to temporarily lead Group A. According to the schedule, coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's team will face host U19 Indonesia in the final group match on June 7. This is expected to be a decisive game for the top spot in the group as well as the ticket to the semifinals of the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship.
