World Cup 2030 - Celebrating 100 Years of the First Tournament

According to a Vietnam News Agency correspondent in South America, this committee will include representatives from the Uruguayan government, the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), and the Montevideo city government. Its mission is to coordinate organizational activities, identify infrastructure investment needs, implement projects to upgrade sports facilities, and receive proposals from relevant stakeholders.

President Yamandú Orsi chaired a meeting with National Sports Minister Alejandro Pereda, Deputy National Sports Director Gabriela Freire, Montevideo Mayor Mario Bergara, AUF President Ignacio Alonso, and several other officials to discuss preparations for the event.

The working group will define the project scope, technical requirements, and necessary construction and renovation items in the coming weeks. The Uruguayan government stated that hosting the 2030 World Cup will be an interdisciplinary task, mobilizing the participation of multiple state agencies.

The 2030 World Cup holds special significance for Uruguay, as the tournament coincides with the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup organized by FIFA in 1930 in Montevideo. At that time, Uruguay not only served as the host nation but also won the championship after defeating Argentina in the final at the Centenario Stadium.

Under the plan approved by FIFA, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will respectively host the opening matches of their national teams to honor South American football history. This is because Uruguay hosted and won the first World Cup, Argentina was the runner-up in the 1930 World Cup, and Paraguay is home to the oldest football confederation in the world, CONMEBOL, established in 1916. Afterward, the majority of 2030 World Cup matches will be held in the three co-hosting nations: Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.

Being selected as the venue for the opening match is seen as an opportunity for Uruguay to promote its national image, boost tourism, and upgrade its infrastructure system to serve one of the world's biggest sporting events.
