In the second group stage match of the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship, the U19 Vietnam team under coach Yutaka Ikeuchi delivered an impressive performance. Facing a tough opponent in U19 Myanmar, our young players completely dominated the game.
The goal spree began with a close-range header from Tan Dung, before Cong Hau doubled the lead in the first half. In the second half, the momentum continued as Van Bach, Duy Khang, and Thien Phu each found the back of the net, securing a resounding 5-0 victory for the "Golden Star Warriors".
In the later match that followed, U19 Indonesia only managed a 3-0 win over U19 Timor Leste. Both U19 Vietnam and U19 Indonesia share the top two spots with a perfect 6 points after two rounds. However, thanks to a superior goal difference (+8 compared to +6), coach Ikeuchi's team successfully holds the top position in Group A.
The official answer at the moment is Not yet. The format of the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship is extremely tough: the tournament is divided into three groups, but only the three group winners and the single best runner-up secure a semifinal spot.
To decide their own fate and confidently progress to the semifinals, U19 Vietnam faces the following scenarios in the last group match:
Scenario: Win or draw against U19 Indonesia: This is the ideal and most secure scenario. Since they have a better goal difference than their opponent, a result ranging from a draw to a win against the host team will officially secure top spot in Group A and a direct ticket to the semifinals.
Scenario: Lose to U19 Indonesia: If unfortunately defeated in the final match, U19 Vietnam will drop to second place in Group A. In that case, the host team would rise to the top with 9 points and earn direct qualification. The Vietnamese team would then have to hope their record is enough to become the best runner-up among the three groups to advance.
However, competing for the best runner-up spot is not straightforward. Since Group C has only three teams, results against the bottom team in Groups A and B will be excluded when comparing records. This could significantly alter U19 Vietnam's metrics if they fall to second place.
Based on their performance over two matches, U19 Vietnam holds their destiny in their hands. As long as they avoid defeat against U19 Indonesia in the match on June 7, coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's team will officially secure a semifinal berth as Group A winners.
