Indonesia does not want a draw against U19 Vietnam

The chance for U19 Indonesia to secure a semifinal berth in the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship remains wide open. However, the host team cannot rely solely on a draw when facing U19 Vietnam in the final Group A match at 8:00 PM on June 7.

This situation emerged after Putu Panji and his teammates defeated U19 Timor Leste 3-0 at the Utama Sumatra Utara Stadium on the evening of June 4. Those three points were crucial but still insufficient to put Indonesia at the top of the standings.

The team coached by Nova Arianto displayed dominance throughout the match and secured their second consecutive victory. Nevertheless, their position is not yet truly safe.

U19 Vietnam still leads Group A. Therefore, the final match will be decisive, determining which team earns direct advancement to the semifinals.

The victory over U19 Timor Leste was built on an opening goal by Reno Salampessy in the 43rd minute, followed by second-half goals from Irpan Siregar and Arkhan Kaka. Those three strikes allowed Indonesia to close the match with a convincing win.

This result gives U19 Indonesia six points after two matches. Earlier, Garuda Muda had also beaten U19 Myanmar 3-0.

Meanwhile, U19 Vietnam has also shown equally impressive form. After defeating U19 Timor Leste in their opener, they went on to trounce U19 Myanmar 5-0 and currently hold a superior goal difference.

In the meantime, U19 Timor Leste and U19 Myanmar have been officially eliminated. Both have yet to earn any points after two matches.

The format of the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship creates fierce competition. A total of 11 teams are participating, divided into three groups in the group stage.

The top three teams from each group will directly advance to the semifinals. The remaining spot goes to the best second-placed team among all three groups, leaving virtually no margin for error.

The method for determining the best runner-up is not straightforward because Group C has only three teams. To ensure fairness, results against the bottom team in Group A and Group B will be excluded.

This makes the path to advancing as a runner-up highly risky. If they finish second, Indonesia will have to wait for results from other groups and hope their record is good enough to progress.

Looking at the current situation, a draw is not an ideal scenario for U19 Indonesia. One point could make their position heavily dependent on outcomes from other matches.

Moreover, the final Group A match takes place earlier than those in Group B and Group C. If they fail to top the group, U19 Indonesia will have to wait anxiously until all group-stage fixtures are completed.

The clash between U19 Indonesia and U19 Vietnam will take place on Sunday (June 7). This match is effectively regarded as an "early final" to determine the Group A winner.

Therefore, the safest route for coach Nova Arianto and his players is to win. Three points will guarantee Indonesia finishes top of the group and secures a direct semifinal spot without needing to consider other teams' results.
