Southeast Asian representatives had their match unexpectedly canceled on the eve of the World Cup.

The Philippine women's team had their first friendly match in their US training camp canceled suddenly, even as they rush to prepare for the 2027 Women's World Cup.

The Philippine women's national team is entering a preparation phase that is crucial for their journey toward the 2027 Women's World Cup. However, the Southeast Asian side's plans were unexpectedly disrupted when their first friendly in the US training camp was called off at the last minute with no official explanation given for the cancellation.

According to the original schedule, the Philippine women's team arrived in San Diego, California, for an intense multi-day training camp. This is seen as part of a long-term strategy to boost the team's competitiveness before tackling major global goals. Their first opponent in the camp was set to be San Diego Wave FC on June 4.

However, the match could not go ahead as planned. As of June 5, neither the Philippine Football Federation nor the team's official media channels had provided a specific reason for the cancellation. This surprised fans, as the game was expected to be a valuable test for the coaching staff to evaluate the squad's strength after the training camp.

Despite this unexpected setback, the Philippine women's team continues its training program in the US. The squad is currently led by head coach Mark Torcaso and has received substantial investment from the Philippine Football Federation. Previously, PFF President John Anthony Gutierrez stated: "The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) is not only committed to bringing the Philippine women's players to the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, but also wants them to arrive fully prepared to win and bring joy to the fans. That means the federation will provide coach Torcaso and the team with all necessary resources to prepare at the highest possible level."

This training camp brings together many key players who participated in the 2023 Women's World Cup, such as captain Hali Long, goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel, Angie Beard, Jaclyn Sawicki, Katrina Guillou, and Chandler McDaniel. In addition, several emerging young talents like Alexa Pino, Jael-Marie Guy, and Ariana Markey are also included, forming a squad considered deep and full of potential.

The Philippines is currently the only Southeast Asian representative to hold a ticket to the 2027 Women's World Cup. Meanwhile, the Vietnamese women's team failed to achieve its goal of qualifying after being eliminated in the semifinals of the 2026 Women's Asian Cup.
