According to a Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Berlin, Professor of Sports Politics and Sociology at the German Sport University Cologne, Jürgen Mittag, believes that Nagelsmann is attempting to drive deeper structural reforms for the "German Tank," but is also creating stronger polarization in the process.
Sports consultant Cody Royle, who has worked with teams in top leagues like the Premier League, notes the mounting pressure on the German head coach, yet sees the Neuer decision as a sign that Nagelsmann is in control and committed to his own methods. He argues that Nagelsmann handled the goalkeeper situation skillfully, showing calm confidence and thoughtful, intelligent reasoning when explaining why he chose Neuer. Nagelsmann stood firm in his stance and did not waver, even knowing it was an unpopular decision among fans.
German national team player Pascal Gross also emphasized that "Nagelsmann's authority within the squad has not been affected in the slightest."
After EURO 2024, Nagelsmann delivered an emotional speech highlighting community, solidarity, and a return to shared experiences. Most fans were pleasantly surprised and impressed by his open display of emotion.
However, after two years, not only has Germany changed, but so too have perceptions of the team and its coach. The positive atmosphere of a home tournament has faded, replaced by global political turmoil, an overloaded World Cup, and a head coach who, just weeks before the competition, was still uncertain about his best starting lineup.
Despite his wavering reputation, Nagelsmann remains optimistic. Speaking to the German press, he said: "We are ready. I don't know if it's my job to generate hype before a tournament, but my job is to create moments that bring joy."
