The 0-2 loss to U19 Australia in the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship final caused many Thai supporters to openly express disappointment, with some worrying about what lies ahead for the country's young football talent.
On the evening of June 13, Thailand's U19 team entered the ASEAN U19 Championship final with a chance to make history. Before kickoff, they shared the record of five tournament titles with U19 Australia. Beating their opponents would have given the young Thai side sole possession of the top spot in the region.
However, what Thai fans got instead was disappointment. Despite controlling possession and starting with great determination, Thailand's U19s failed to turn their advantage into goals.
The turning point came in the 41st minute when Wong took a free kick from the right flank, allowing Garbowski to leap high and head the ball in to open the scoring for U19 Australia. In the second half, Thailand pushed forward with all their might. Ithimon, Tatu, and Buransuk all had clear chances but missed them one by one. With the team pushed too far forward in the closing minutes, the Thai side paid the price again. In the 97th minute, Beckham Baker capitalized on a defensive error to score and seal a 2-0 victory for U19 Australia.
Right after the match, many Thai fans expressed their disappointment with the team's performance.
"What a pity. Our ball possession wasn't bad, but we lacked sharpness at crucial moments. It was a final where the players underperformed completely."
Many believe that Thai youth football is stagnating compared to regional rivals. "Indonesia has improved very quickly in recent years, while Vietnam has always maintained stability at all levels. If we keep developing like this, it will be very hard for us to regain the top position."
Another group lamented that Thailand's U19s were so close to a historic milestone.
"We had a chance to become the most successful team in Southeast Asia, but we let it slip away in the most painful way. The players fought hard, but effectiveness was lacking."
Even one fan made a very harsh remark: "We keep complacently thinking we're the strongest, but look at reality. With this sluggish progress, it's hard to surpass Vietnam's position in the near future, let alone dream of reaching the continental level."
Alongside the criticism, there were still voices calling for patience with this young squad.
"Don't turn your back on them too soon. Defeat is part of football. What matters is identifying the issues and improving so we can come back stronger."
On the other side, U19 Australia's 2-0 win officially made them the most successful team in the history of the ASEAN U19 Championship with six titles. Meanwhile, Thailand's U19s will have to wait longer to realize their dream of overtaking their rivals in the regional achievement race.
