Australia defeats U19 Thailand, sets record with 6 Southeast Asian championships

Toppling U19 Thailand 2-0 in a dramatic final match, U19 Australia has established a historic milestone by claiming the Southeast Asian championship for the 6th time.

On the evening of June 13, the dream final of the 2026 U19 Southeast Asian Championship between U19 Australia and U19 Thailand took place in an intensely dramatic fashion at the North Sumatra Stadium (Deli Serdang, Indonesia). Before kickoff, both football nations shared the record of 5 regional titles. Therefore, the winner of this decisive clash would officially surpass the rival to claim the great record alone with a 6th championship.

In the first half, U19 Thailand controlled possession more and sought to create dangerous scoring opportunities from the early minutes. However, U19 Australia, with resilient composure, quickly regained control and launched repeated attacks on the opponent's goal.

The turning point came in the 41st minute. From a tricky free kick on the right flank by Wong, the ball was delivered deep to the far post, allowing Garbowski to charge in with a powerful header, scoring the opening goal for U19 Australia at 1-0.

In the second half, with nothing to lose, U19 Thailand made several substitutions and launched an all-out offensive effort to find an equalizer. The young Thai team created numerous prime chances in front of Australia's goal.

However, the lack of sharpness from strikers such as Ithimon, Tatu, and Buransuk saw those opportunities slip away regretfully, as shots repeatedly hit the crossbar or went wide of the post.

In the final minutes, U19 Thailand recklessly pushed their formation forward, leaving their defensive half completely exposed. Seizing this opening, U19 Australia struck the decisive blow.

In the 97th minute, following a clumsy play by a U19 Thailand player, Beckham Baker quickly stole the ball and calmly finished, sealing a 2-0 victory for U19 Australia. As the final whistle blew, the Australian team celebrated their championship, setting a monumental record and leaving former champions such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Myanmar (with 2 titles each) far behind, as well as U19 Vietnam in the overall medal standings.
