Former Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is now the leading candidate for the AC Milan job. After a 14-month stint at Old Trafford, he was fired in January for publicly attacking the club's owners. Since his dismissal, Amorim has been connected with clubs like Benfica and Fulham, but he remains unemployed.

After Mourinho left Benfica, the 41-year-old Amorim was viewed as a strong contender to take over. However, sources indicate it's unlikely he will return to Benfica, despite having played 154 games for the club over six years. Amorim is eager to prove himself in one of Europe's top five leagues and show United they were wrong to let him go.
Although no agreement has been reached yet, AC Milan officials have held talks with Amorim's agent. Amorim is likely one of the candidates to replace Massimiliano Allegri, who was sacked in May after a shocking final-day loss to Cagliari, which cost the team a Champions League spot despite a favorable position.
In March, Milan led the fifth-placed team by nine points after a derby win over eventual champions Inter. However, they won only three of their next ten matches, allowing Cesc Fabregas's surprise team Como to overtake them by a single point. Allegri was deemed to have lost control of the dressing room and was quickly let go.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner was initially the top choice for Milan, along with U.S. national team coach Mauricio Pochettino. But now Amorim has emerged as the favorite. Portuguese newspaper *A Bola* reports that negotiations are advanced, with some terms already agreed. Amorim would sign a two-year contract with an option for a third season, earning an annual salary between €3 million and €4 million.
One report suggests Amorim could receive a base salary of €3.5 million, with bonuses potentially bringing it up to €5 million. Notably, if he returns to coaching, Manchester United would also benefit financially.

When United fired Amorim and his staff, they agreed to pay a fixed compensation of £10 million, plus an additional £6.7 million in deferred payments—partly for his coaching team and partly based on how long he remained unemployed. If Amorim takes a new job next season, United could save around £5 million.
The Red Devils are clearly eager for Amorim to start a new role soon. CEO Omar Berrada publicly praised Amorim earlier this month, saying he was not without achievements at Old Trafford. "Amorim deserves high praise," Berrada said. "He helped raise the overall level in the dressing room during a very difficult season. I'm confident he will become an excellent coach in the future."
Portuguese media report that Amorim is highly regarded by AC Milan's key figure, Zlatan Ibrahimovic—who, like Amorim, is a former United player. Ibrahimovic helped United win the League Cup and Europa League under Mourinho. Under Allegri, Ibrahimovic was sidelined, but now he is set to regain influence.
Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano stated: "Amorim is a strong candidate to become the new Milan coach. The young Portuguese manager is eager for the job and has opened the door to Milan. Another candidate is Matthias Jaissle, but his current club Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia is demanding compensation."
If Amorim ultimately takes charge of the Rossoneri, he will face his former club in a preseason match. Last week, United announced a friendly against AC Milan on August 15 in Wroclaw, Poland, just one week before the Premier League season starts.

Another former United manager, Ralf Rangnick, is no longer in the running for the Milan job. Rangnick served as United's interim coach from 2021 to 2022 with poor results, then moved on to manage the Austrian national team, where he performed well. He has now extended his contract until 2028.
