Italian transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has verified that Arsenal has contacted Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. There were discussions between the clubs in the January winter window, and the newly crowned Premier League winners might make another approach.

After clinching the Premier League title, Arsenal aims to act swiftly to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming season. They intend to capitalize on Guardiola's departure from Manchester City to build their own dynasty and even target the Champions League. Arteta is determined to assemble a team capable of dominating domestically and advancing deep in Europe, with the midfield being a crucial area. The 26-year-old Italian international has once again become a target.
Romano states that although Manchester United also admire Tonali, owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is very mindful of finances and has not taken any substantial action. This financial hesitation at Old Trafford may have opened the door for other top clubs.
Arsenal has contacted Tonali's agent in recent days. Moreover, Arsenal is not the only club interested in Tonali; Manchester City is also closely monitoring him. However, Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson remains the primary target for the 'Cityzens', with Tonali being a backup option.
Romano explained: 'There are many questions about Manchester United and Tonali. You may recall that reports in April and May linked both Ederson and Tonali to United. Now I can provide the latest updates on both matters. Regarding Ederson, United have decided to sign him. As for Tonali, United still appreciate him, but as far as I understand, he is far from joining United at the moment. At this stage, United consider the total cost of the transfer fee and salary too high, so they are not interested in this deal right now. Tonali could also be an option for Manchester City, although their current focus is on Anderson.'

Regarding Arsenal's move, Romano added: 'Arsenal also contacted Newcastle in recent days to inquire about Tonali's situation, which has put them in the race. More clubs may join in the future, so the story of Tonali's transfer could become very interesting.'
The Athletic's David Ornstein has confirmed Manchester United's current indecisive mindset, which applies to both Tonali and Matheus Fernandes.
Ornstein said: 'Manchester United appreciate M. Fernandes' talent and potential. However, the club currently believes West Ham's asking price is not good value. United's recruitment team sees M. Fernandes as a promising midfielder with great potential, but the club is cautious about paying such a high fee. If West Ham does not lower their demands, United is prepared to walk away and look for other targets.'
He continued his analysis: 'The club currently has multiple midfielders on their shortlist and does not intend to get involved in a prolonged transfer saga. The players being considered include Tonali, Carlos Baleba, Anderson, and Tchouaméni. United believes these players each have their own strengths but can all immediately strengthen the midfield. The top priority remains signing a midfielder who can bring athleticism, ball control, defensive solidity, and leadership. At this point, M. Fernandes is still highly regarded, but if United feels the transfer fee does not match the player's current market value, they will not hesitate to explore other options.'

Manchester United's transfers have always been slow, and fans are used to it. They only hope that Carrick eventually gets the ideal new players, and the price does not need to be overly concerning.
