Former Vietnam national team defender breaks down in tears after a tumultuous journey

Following a decade-plus of upheavals, Le Quang Hung couldn't hold back his tears as Hanoi Police FC claimed the National Cup trophy.

A 2-1 victory over Ninh Binh in the 2025/26 National Cup final not only secured Hanoi Police FC a historic title but also created an emotional moment for defender Le Quang Hung. As the final whistle blew, the 1992-born player burst into tears, marking the end of a redemption journey that spanned over a decade, full of ups and downs and dramatic events.

Returning to Ninh Binh Stadium—the site of the biggest turning point in his career—Quang Hung could not hide his emotions. "Thirteen years ago, I fell here and also grew up from this very place. Today, coming back and standing on the highest podium, I am truly overjoyed," the Hanoi Police FC defender shared after the match.

For Quang Hung, this championship carries greater significance than any other title. In 2014, he was one of the players hit with a lifetime ban related to a match-fixing case in the AFC Cup. His career seemed over, but the Vietnam Football Federation's decision to lift the ban in 2023 opened the door for his return to professional football.

During his time away from the pitch, the defender from Thanh Hoa had to take on various jobs to make a living, from security guard to delivery driver. In those difficult days, his family became his biggest support, helping him overcome adversity. Moreover, the trust from clubs and football figures gave Quang Hung the motivation to pursue his passion once again.

After making his comeback with Binh Duong and later joining Hanoi Police FC, the 34-year-old gradually regained his standing. The National Cup title is not only a reward for his relentless efforts but also a testament to the resilience of a player who once faced the end of his career.

Though he has already won a major trophy, Quang Hung still has an unfinished dream with Vietnamese football. "I have always hoped to one day wear the Vietnam national team jersey again, even just once. That is the biggest dream of my life. I will continue to give my all on the pitch for my club and seek the chance to experience that immense happiness one more time," the veteran defender affirmed.
