The Vietnam national team enters the 2026 ASEAN Cup title defense campaign with a squad featuring several notable changes, including five naturalized players: Nguyễn Xuân Son, Đỗ Hoàng Hên, Patrik Le Giang, Nguyễn Tài Lộc, and Ngô Đăng Khoa.
The presence of naturalized players gives the Vietnam team more tactical options, especially in attack. However, due to some players being absent because of club-level schedules, Coach Kim will need to weigh options to find the optimal core before finalizing the roster.
Based on the current call-up list, the expected starting lineup of Vietnam at the 2026 ASEAN Cup is likely to be built around the familiar 3-4-3 formation of Coach Kim Sang-sik.

The goalkeeper position sees a major change as Patrik Le Giang is called up for the first time after completing his naturalization procedures in Vietnam.
Born in 1992, the goalkeeper has European playing experience, having represented Slovakia's youth teams before coming to Vietnam. In the 2025-2026 season, Le Giang played a key role in helping CA Ho Chi Minh City finish 5th in the V-League and win the National Cup. He is highly rated for his reflexes, defensive command, and consistency.
Although he will have to compete with familiar names like Đặng Văn Lâm and Trần Trung Kiên, given his performances, it would not be surprising if Patrik Le Giang secures the starting spot in Vietnam's goal.

Coach Kim Sang-sik is likely to prioritize the three-center-back system that has helped Vietnam operate effectively in recent times.
Bùi Hoàng Việt Anh remains a key choice thanks to his tackling ability, speed, and ball-playing skills. Meanwhile, Nguyễn Thành Chung and Đỗ Duy Mạnh are still experienced players who have been pillars in many major tournaments. However, in terms of form, Thành Chung may have to give way to Đoàn Văn Hậu at the left-center-back position.
In the meantime, young talents like Đinh Quang Kiệt or Nguyễn Nhật Minh could be given opportunities if they perform well during the preparation phase.

The midfield area continues to be a strength of the Vietnam team, boasting many technically gifted midfielders.
Nguyễn Hoàng Đức remains the core player in controlling the game's tempo. His ability to escape pressure, pass, and support attacks makes him almost certain to start.
Alongside Hoàng Đức, Nguyễn Quang Hải is likely to take on a creative role in midfield. The presence of Nguyễn Hai Long, Lê Phạm Thành Long, Lê Văn Đô, and Khuất Văn Khang gives Coach Kim many options when changes in play are needed.
Newcomer Ngô Đăng Khoa is also a notable name. The midfielder, born in 2006, grew up in Australia and possesses speed, technique, and the ability to play multiple positions in attack.

The attacking line is the most anticipated area of the Vietnam national team at the 2026 ASEAN Cup.
After completing his naturalization procedures, Nguyễn Tài Lộc (Geovane) will bring an additional quality option to the attack. The Brazilian-born striker has spent many years playing in the V-League, is familiar with Vietnamese football, and has the ability to create breakthroughs.
Meanwhile, Nguyễn Xuân Son continues to be the biggest hope following his outstanding previous performances. His strength, finishing, and ability to apply pressure give Vietnam another top-level attacking edge. Đỗ Hoàng Hên is also expected to make a difference with his individual technique, ball-handling skills, and V-League experience.
The attacking trio of Hên - Lộc - Son could become Coach Kim Sang-sik's main offensive strategy.

Coach Kim Sang-sik still has a friendly match against Myanmar on July 18 to finalize the squad before embarking on the title defense journey. Vietnam will kick off Group A with a match against Timor Leste on July 24 away from home.
