Vietnam national team and Coach Kim Sang Sik's golden opportunity

Winning just one more tournament would allow Vietnam to match Singapore's four ASEAN championships. Having triumphed in 2008, 2018, and 2024, Coach Kim Sang Sik's side stands on the verge of a historic moment as they aim to reaffirm their premier status in the region at the 2026 ASEAN Cup.

When Coach Kim Sang Sik announced the 28-man squad preparing for the2026 ASEAN Cup, regional media immediately took special notice.

Thai media considers Vietnam, along with Indonesia and Thailand, as the three strongest contenders for the title. That assessment accurately reflects the current balance of power.

Unlike many previous periods, Vietnam's national team no longer relies on just a few individuals. Coach Kim Sang Sik now commands a squad with remarkable depth across all positions, especially an attack that is considered the strongest in the history ofVietnamese football.

For the first time, Vietnam's national team can build its offense around three Brazilian-born strikers: Xuan Son, Hoang Hen, and Tai Loc. Each brings a unique style, but they share common traits: good physique, diverse finishing skills, and high ability to create breakthroughs.

However, the strength of Vietnam's team lies not only in its forwards. What makes many opponents cautious is the midfield, which now gathers some of the best names.

Hoang Duc continues to be the tactical brain. After a tough period due to injury, the Ninh Binh midfielder has returned strongly with his ability to control the game and score crucial goals.

Alongside him is Quang Hai, who just completed a successful season with Cong An Ha Noi, earning the title of best player in theV-League. The duo of Hoang Duc and Quang Hai could well become the heart of Vietnam's team in big matches.

Another notable point is the increasing emergence of promising young players. Coach Kim Sang Sik does not hesitate to give opportunities to new faces if they have enough ability.

Dinh Bac is a prime example. At just 22 years old, the striker ofCong An Ha Noihas had an explosive season with impressive goal-scoring form. His speed, technique, and confidence make him a game-changer at any moment.

The youngest player in this squad is Khoa Ngo. The 20-year-old forward from Cong An TP.HCM possesses modern football thinking and pace. If he adapts well, Khoa Ngo could become one of the most notable discoveries for Vietnam in the near future.

Alongside them are Gia Hung and Viet Cuong. Both are 25-26 years old, considered the peak age for a footballer. They are no longer too young to lack experience, yet still have abundant energy to provide a boost for the team.

Looking at competing rivals, Thailand remains the top regional powerhouse with seven titles. Indonesia has become increasingly formidable thanks to an aggressive naturalization policy. But the current Vietnam team has reasons to be confident.

More importantly, Coach Kim Sang Sik has a very favorable preparation period. A training camp in South Korea and international friendlies will help him refine the squad, test tactics, and build cohesion among the players.

Unlike previous rushed training sessions, this time Vietnam has sufficient time to pursue long-term goals. That is a huge advantage in the long race at theASEAN Cup.
