World Cup 2026: The Perfect Base Camp for the US National Team

During an open training session on June 15 at the Great Park Sports Complex, more than 5,500 fans turned out to watch their beloved players practice, generating an electrifying atmosphere that energized the squad. For the "Stars and Stripes warriors," this venue is more than just a training ground—it is a true home, allowing the entire team to cast aside all off-field concerns and fully concentrate on their goal of capturing the World Cup. Discovering such an environment is hailed as an unforeseen triumph by the organizing committee.

Sam Zapatka, the general manager of the US team, revealed that he began the search for this location three years ago, facing numerous challenges. Initially, the team intended to set up camp at the University of California, Irvine, but contractual complications with FIFA forced a last-minute change of plans. As soon as they stepped into Great Park, US soccer specialists immediately sensed that this was where the team belonged, and the decision to relocate the base camp was made within a single day. Spanning over 17 hectares with 24 soccer pitches, the facility offers everything needed—from modern changing rooms to a spacious outdoor medical zone.

The level of comfort here makes the players feel thoroughly pampered. Defender Tim Ream shared that every tiny detail is meticulously handled, allowing them to be mentally at ease whether they are training in the gym or on the pitch. Meanwhile, the hotel in Laguna Niguel serves as a peaceful sanctuary where the players can unwind after grueling practice sessions. They have their own spaces to enjoy coffee, receive recovery massages, and even gather to watch NBA Finals games together to relieve stress. One intriguing routine is that players often walk barefoot on the grass after each training session—a technique for restoring balance that they previously used in Qatar.

The US team's group stage campaign will continue with a match against Australia in Seattle on June 19. Despite having to travel thousands of kilometers, the entire squad will return to their base camp in Irvine to recover ahead of their final group stage encounter against Turkey. With millions of dollars invested in equipment and logistics, the US national team now possesses the ideal launching pad to soar at the 2026 World Cup on home soil. The satisfaction of head coach Mauricio Pochettino and the unity of the entire squad stand as the clearest testament to the success of the three-year preparation effort.
