According to a Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Algiers, football has long held the top spot in Algeria in terms of popularity-wise, in terms of fan base and social influence. From big cities to modest residential areas, images of children and teenagers playing football can be seen everywhere.

Every afternoon, it is easy to spot impromptu matches on small grass pitches, empty lots, or even right in narrow streets. This street football environment has helped build a solid technical foundation for generations of Algerian players. Combined with the abundant physical strength typical of many African teams, Algeria is always seen as a tough opponent in major tournaments.

Algeria boasts several talented players in its squad for the 2026 World Cup. One of the most talked-about names is Ibrahim Maza, a player born in 2005 with an Algerian father and a Vietnamese mother. Currently valued at around 45 million euros (approx. 1,350 billion VND), Ibrahim Maza is considered one of the most promising talents in Algerian football talents. This young midfielder is seen by many local fans as a symbol of the new generation of the national team.

Ayoub, a fan in Algiers, shared: “Ibrahim Maza is currently one of Algeria's best players. He is a great talent, and we have high expectations for the team in this World Cup.”

Besides Ibrahim Maza, the Algerian squad is also notable for including goalkeeper Luca Zidane – son of French football legend Zinedine Zidane.

Mr. Zikiou Karim, a barber in Algiers, stated: “I will watch the game with friends. Seeing Algeria take on the world champions is very special. We believe the team can spring a surprise.”

According to the Algerian Football Federation, the team is training at the Rock Chalk Park sports complex at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, USA. All called-up players are present and accounted for with no serious injuries reported, which creates favorable conditions for the coaching staff's preparations.

Coach Vladimir Petkovic's squad enters the World Cup with considerable confidence following positive results recently. Notably, Algeria surprised many by defeating the Netherlands 1-0 away in a pre-tournament friendly. In their last 18 matches, the North African side has suffered only two defeats. This consistent form, along with the development of many young players, brings hope for a successful World Cup campaign.
