After 16 years with the national team? The 34-year-old Neymar breaks down: I gave it my all! But it's all over

In the third Round of 16 match of the World Cup, which concluded on July 6 Beijing time, the heavily favored Brazilian men's team lost 1-2 to Norway, stunningly failing to reach the quarterfinals and ending their World Cup campaign, marking their worst performance in 36 years.[Watch the World Cup on Migu Video]

In this match, Neymar, who came off the bench, scored a penalty in stoppage time but could not prevent Brazil's elimination. When the final whistle blew, Neymar collapsed to the ground in tears. After the match, the 34-year-old Neymar appeared to announce his retirement from the Brazilian national team.

In an interview, Neymar said: "I gave my all, again and again. Now, it's all over. I started my national team career here, and I'm ending it here too."

"Here" refers to MetLife Stadium. In 2010, Neymar made his national team debut in a friendly between Brazil and the United States at that very stadium. Now, 16 years later, he appears to be ending his Brazil national team career at the same venue.

At 34 years old, he has participated in four World Cups for Brazil, playing a total of 15 matches, scoring 9 goals and providing 4 assists. Although his stoppage-time penalty in this match allowed him to score in a fourth consecutive World Cup, making him only the second Brazilian after Pelé to achieve this feat, and also making him the oldest Brazilian goalscorer in World Cup history, Neymar's four World Cup campaigns with the team have yielded a best result of only 4th place in the 2014 home tournament, which is indeed less than ideal.
