The showdown between two top title contenders in the Round of 16 becomes an "early final" between two long-standing rivals.

Portugal reached this stage after a nerve-wracking encounter with Croatia in the Round of 32. Roberto Martinez's side narrowly secured their spot with one of the most thrilling scenarios in tournament history, needing a 90+4th-minute goal from Goncalo Ramos and a controversial VAR decision that disallowed a goal in the final seconds to preserve a 2-1 victory.

The thrilling win over Croatia allowed Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates to keep their World Cup dream alive, while also breaking a 60-year curse dating back to their historic victory over North Korea in 1966, when they managed to come from behind for the first time.

Facing Spain, the Portuguese side must confront the Round of 16 curse that has haunted them. That nightmare has followed the "European Selecao" from the 2010 and 2018 World Cups as well as EURO 2020, where they were eliminated at this very stage.

Martinez and his players will need to put in great effort if they want to reach the quarter-finals for the second consecutive time.

Unlike their neighbors, Spain has had a fairly comfortable journey from the start of the tournament. After a surprising draw in their opening group match, Luis de la Fuente's squad returned to top form, asserting their status as European champions.

The 3-0 victory over Austria was the first time La Roja won a World Cup knockout match in regular time since the 2010 final.

As of now, Spain is the only team that has not conceded a goal in the 2026 World Cup. They are also the second European representative to achieve this after Switzerland in 2006. Goalkeeper Unai Simon set a record of 519 minutes without conceding at the World Cup. The defensive line featuring Pau Cubarsi, Aymeric Laporte, and Rodri is providing La Roja with a solid defense through ball control.

Notably, Spain has extended their unbeaten run across all competitions to 34 matches (25 wins, 9 draws), just one game shy of their own unprecedented record.

Spain's success bears the clear imprint of De la Fuente, who remains unbeaten in his first 11 matches at major tournaments like the World Cup and EURO. If he can overcome Portugal, De la Fuente will match the achievements of two renowned managers, Aime Jacquet and Louis van Gaal, who each had unbeaten runs of 12 matches in continental and global competitions.

In terms of head-to-head history, Spain holds the advantage, having lost only 7 of 41 encounters with Portugal in the past. Portugal has managed to defeat Spain only once in the last 20 years, a 1-0 win in the group stage of EURO 2004.

At the 2018 World Cup finals, Portugal and Spain played out a dramatic 3-3 draw. In that match, Ronaldo shone with a hat-trick. The 41-year-old superstar was also part of the Portugal side that lost 0-1 to Spain in the Round of 16 at the 2010 World Cup. Spain went on to win that tournament.

CR7 has just relieved pressure by scoring his first goal in a World Cup knockout round. The 39-year-old striker is also a "scourge" for Spain, having netted 4 goals against them in his career.

Despite shining many times against the Spanish side, Ronaldo has yet to help Portugal defeat them in regular time at major tournaments. This adds even more pressure on the 39-year-old superstar as the two teams meet again in Dallas.

On Spain's side, striker Mikel Oyarzabal will shoulder the goal-scoring responsibility. The forward is in excellent form with 4 goals so far in the tournament. This is the best performance by a Spanish player at a World Cup since David Villa in 2010.

In this rematch, the European Selecao also has reason to be confident, as in their most recent meeting in June 2025, they won on penalties to claim the Nations League title.

The marquee match between Portugal and Spain will take place at 2 a.m. on July 7. The Iberian Peninsula derby is not just a clash between two top European teams. It is also a contest between two football development philosophies that have coexisted for decades.

Expected starting lineups for both teams
Portugal: Costa, Cancelo, Dias, Veiga, Mendes, Vitinha, Joao Neves, Fernandes, Neto, Leao, Ronaldo
Spain: Simon, Porro, Cubarsi, Laporte, Cucurella, Rodri, Pedri, Yamal, Olmo, Baena, Oyarzabal
