On the other side of the pitch, Spain have been showing highly convincing form. Luis de la Fuente's side have yet to concede a single goal and remain the only team with a clean sheet at the 2026 World Cup.

Returning to the clash at AT&T Stadium, Spain took the initiative from the opening whistle. In the 3rd minute, Mikel Oyarzabal fired the first shot but couldn't beat goalkeeper Diogo Costa. By the 8th minute, Oyarzabal had another one-on-one chance but his finish went wide of the post.

Portugal responded with a long-range effort from Joao Cancelo before Ronaldo feinted and shot in the 12th minute, forcing Spain keeper Unai Simon to narrow the angle and make a save. On the other end, Diogo Costa emerged as Portugal's hero with a series of brilliant saves against Lamine Yamal and Alex Baena in the 16th minute, and then denied Dani Olmo in the 31st.

Late in the first half, Portugal created the most dangerous opportunity. From a corner kick, Ronaldo set up Bruno Mendes, whose powerful shot struck a Spanish defender and then the crossbar before bouncing away, much to Portugal's regret.

After the break, Spain continued to ramp up the pressure. Yamal repeatedly troubled the opposition defense, while Diogo Costa remained solid, making a fine save from the youngster's tricky direct free kick in the 73rd minute.

It seemed the game was heading into extra time, but in the first minute of stoppage time, Ferran Torres delivered a pass that allowed Mikel Merino to race forward and slot the ball past the Portuguese goalkeeper, scoring the match's only goal.

In the remaining minutes, Portugal threw everything forward. Bernardo Silva headed just wide in the 90+6th minute, and Bruno Fernandes' final free kick failed to find Ronaldo.

In the end, Spain won 1-0 to advance, while Ronaldo's 2026 World Cup journey ended in regret.
