FIFA President Gianni Infantino faces a demand for investigation

According to AP, a coalition of members from the European Parliament has initiated a call to probe Mr. Infantino's involvement in the affair. The letter currently being circulated within the European Parliament also urges football federations across the European Union to request FIFA to carry out a formal examination of how the case was handled, and to determine whether any political factors played a role.

The dispute originated from the red card Balogun received in the match against Bosnia & Herzegovina on July 1. Under standard regulations, the forward would have been suspended for the following game. Yet FIFA unexpectedly lifted the ban, allowing the US team's primary striker to be available for the round-of-16 encounter with Belgium.

The ruling came after US President Donald Trump acknowledged that he had phoned Mr. Infantino and requested that FIFA reassess the incident. While asserting that he applied no pressure and sought no specific outcome, Mr. Trump stated that the red card for Balogun was "too severe" and that the player's absence would lower the match's quality.

FIFA stated that the decision was reached by the organization's independent Disciplinary Committee. Nonetheless, this marks the first instance in the modern era of the World Cup where a player who received a red card during the tournament did not have to serve a suspension under normal procedures.

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has voiced its objection, characterizing the decision as "unprecedented, inexplicable, and indefensible." Meanwhile, three lawmakers—Barry Andrews, Lara Wolters, and Niels Fuglsang—stated that altering the application of rules midway through the tournament was "a disgrace and a perversion of justice." According to this group, 35 additional lawmakers have signed on to support the investigation petition.

In reply to the criticisms, Mr. Infantino insisted that his conversation with President Trump did not influence the case's resolution. The FIFA chief emphasized that he informed the US leader that all determinations are made by FIFA's independent judicial authorities and that this principle will remain in place. However, the incident continues to spark discussions regarding transparency and autonomy in FIFA's operations, especially given Mr. Infantino's reportedly close ties with President Trump.
