As the premier competition for Southeast Asian men's national football teams, the ASEAN Cup gathers the leading footballing countries in the region to battle for the title of champion.
Over 15 editions, the tournament has marked the strong development of Southeast Asian football and witnessed the dominance of Thailand, who hold the record for the most championships in history.
The competition was first organized by the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) in 1996 in Singapore under the name Tiger Cup, sponsored by Tiger Beer. Ten teams participated, and Thailand became the first champion after defeating Malaysia in the final.

Over time, the tournament has changed names several times to align with sponsors and development goals. From 2007, it was known as the AFF Championship. A year later, Suzuki became the main sponsor, renaming it the AFF Suzuki Cup for over a decade.
In 2022, Mitsubishi Electric took over sponsorship, changing the name to AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup. Starting in 2024, AFF officially renamed the championship from AFF Championship to ASEAN Championship to enhance regional identity, while the commercial name remains ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup.

Typically, the ASEAN Cup is held every two years in even-numbered years. However, there have been two notable exceptions to the schedule. The 2007 edition was moved to an odd year due to the 2006 Asian Games, and the 2020 tournament was postponed to 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
After 15 editions, only four teams have ever lifted the trophy. Thailand is the most successful, with 7 titles in 1996, 2000, 2002, 2014, 2016, 2020, and 2022. The "War Elephants" have almost always maintained their top status in Southeast Asian football and continued to assert their strength by winning the most recent edition.
Behind Thailand, Singapore has won 4 times (1998, 2004, 2007, and 2012). Vietnam has claimed the title three times (2008, 2018, and 2024), while Malaysia has a single championship in 2010.
Notably, Indonesia, despite being considered one of the most promising football nations in the region, has yet to win the ASEAN Cup. The archipelago side has come close several times, appearing in finals but always finishing as runners-up.
In the most recent ASEAN Cup in 2024, Vietnam impressively defeated Thailand with an aggregate score of 5-3 over two legs to win their third championship in history.
