World Cup 2026: Crackdown on interprovincial football betting ring with 400 billion VND in transactions, 11 suspects detained

The Quang Tri Provincial Police have successfully broken up an interprovincial football betting ring linked to the 2026 World Cup, involving transactions worth up to 400 billion VND, resulting in the detention of 11 individuals.

On July 10, 2026, the Criminal Police Department of Quang Tri Province announced that the provincial police investigation agency had issued a decision to temporarily detain 11 suspects involved in a ring organizing online football betting and gambling, which operated across multiple localities. This was the result of undercover operation codenamed 179H, established and carried out by the Quang Tri Provincial Police.

According to the police, through monitoring the situation and applying cyber investigation measures, authorities discovered a football betting ring involving numerous individuals in Hue City and Quang Tri Province. The group operated with sophisticated methods, exploiting the excitement of the 2026 World Cup to organize betting and attract participants.

On July 8, the task force simultaneously deployed multiple teams, approached and arrested 11 related suspects.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects played roles in organizing and participating in gambling. Among them, the group in Hue City includes: Tran Dinh Loc (born 1986), Tran Hiep (born 1993), Vo Van Phi (born 1990), Tran Ngoc Duoc (born 1995), Le Truong Minh (born 1982), and Nguyen Thanh Quang (born 1972).

The group in Quang Tri Province includes: Bui Quang Linh (born 1995), Nguyen Van Binh (born 1987), Tran Tan Cuong (born 2001), Tran Tuan Anh (born 1995), and Nguyen Van Hai (born 1979).

Initial investigation results show that during the 2026 World Cup period alone, the total betting transaction volume of this ring was estimated at around 400 billion VND.

By July 9, the Quang Tri Provincial Police Investigation Agency had issued a decision to temporarily detain all 11 suspects for further investigation and legal processing.
