Quang Hai assumed the captaincy as the Vietnamese squad now comprises personnel with multiple origins, making the job of unifying the locker room anything but simple.

The Vietnamese team enters the 2026 ASEAN Cup with a more heterogeneous personnel structure than before. In the 28-player squad called up in June, coach Kim Sang Sik combined an experienced core, a group of young players, naturalized faces, and players of Vietnamese descent. When multiple training backgrounds come together, the captain's armband no longer merely represents on-field responsibilities.

Nguyen Quang Hai was assigned the role of captain while Do Duy Manh was recovering from injury; Nguyen Hoang Duc and Nguyen Xuan Son served as vice-captains. The VFF emphasized that the 1997-born midfielder possesses a sense of responsibility, professionalism, and the ability to connect members. This shows that the coaching staff's choice was not simply based on seniority, but also aimed at being a bridge in the locker room.

Quang Hai has a suitable background for this task. He once wore the captain's armband for Vietnam's U20 team at the 2017 U20 World Cup, then took on a leadership role with the U23s before moving up to the national team. His journey through multiple levels helps him understand the pressure of a newcomer, while also knowing well the standards that an experienced international must maintain.

Quang Hai himself also acknowledged that this responsibility belongs to the veteran group. He emphasized: "Players who have been with the national team for many years will try to support the newcomers so they can integrate quickly." This is not just a polite gesture, because the new players must simultaneously adapt to tactical requirements, daily routines, and the pressure of wearing the national jersey.

Nguyen Tai Loc is the clearest example. Quang Hai has previously played alongside this naturalized striker at the club level, so he is not unfamiliar with the playing style of his new teammate. Tai Loc also admitted: "I have played with many players here, so adapting has been quite easy." The presence of Xuan Son and Do Hoang Hen also helped him feel more confident during his first call-up.

The fact that Xuan Son made his first appearance in the leadership group as a vice-captain therefore carries more significance than a mere personnel decision. The naturalized player is not only required to integrate but has already begun sharing leadership responsibilities. Quang Hai stands at the center of that structure, connecting the domestic core group with teammates who have different career paths and playing habits.

ASEAN United FC assessed that Quang Hai will play a crucial role in the campaign to defend the championship, after he previously won the tournament's Best Player award in 2018. However, the current challenge is not just about goals or assists. It is also about the soft power of the captain: building trust, maintaining balance, and helping different personalities find a common rhythm.

When the tournament kicks off, the way Nguyen Tai Loc, Do Hoang Hen, Xuan Son, the domestic Vietnamese players, and the younger generation stand together during difficult moments may be the clearest measure of the responsibility behind Quang Hai's armband.
